One that I won't be reading again anytime at all I think is The Physiology of Fear, and not because it wasn't a good story or it wasn't well written, it was both, but I felt like I was reading an actual first hand account by a survivor of WWII or an article interviewing survivors from Auschwitz or something. It wouldn't have been out of place if it had been. ; I was surprised when I read it for the first time. I never imagined that Forrester of all writers, whom I only knew because of his Hornblower novels, would write such a story. It is a very well done story about the Nazi horror and indeed reads more like a report than fiction. Seems that "The Nightmare", as far as I gathered, a collection of similar stories, is OOP. Which is a shame. I am glad I could read the story, but it sticks out like the proverbial thump in this anthology. IMHO it doesn't mix well with the rest.

It was actually one of your posts swampirella that first alerted me to that site. It's got some great stuff. Even though most of my reading is in ebook form these days, it's through necessity really rather than actual choice. My dream one day(possibly in a future life) is to have an actual proper, real library, with real books filling floor to ceiling shelves. Until then though, sites like that are just wonderful. Of course there's always Amazon too. I went there and typed in Pan Horror Stories, chose this one to buy only to be told ' you own this item' which was news to me. I notice the reviews there seem to be very polarised. They either love it with all their heart or hate it with a vengeance. If it's anything like this Pan I've been reading then I'll be one of the 'love it' reviews.
Edit: Oh and, it was £1.99!! I mean, by anyone's yardstick, that's a good deal for that many stories. One of the good things about ebooks is the cost a lot of the time.

Yeah, I mean I've a passing interest in WWII and have read the odd non-fiction book about various battles but this story really brought the individual horror of it all home. It really was a bit of a shock just plonking it in there in between the other stories like that. Very good story of course, but like you say, just seems a bit out of place in this anthology.

You're welcome; I should bookmark luminist so I don't forget it in future. Hopefully one day your dream of a real library will come true in this lifetime.
Whenever you read this book, I'm sure you will love it.
