Looking forward to Saturday... nothing more to say than that really! Don't hang around the railings drinking too long as i am looking for some 'friendly' faces to ensure the bumpkin visiting the big city doesn't feel too lonely!

Excellent news, Charles. Good to see you there too, Sev. I'd better dig out my 'I'm not worthy' kneepads.

Waves of jealousy sweep over me, stuck on the bloody continent.
Stares out across foreign vista, murmurs sentimental patriotic jingle, prays for red cross parcel and reaches for tin of beer in attempt to forget....

Glad everyone had a great time. Look forward to sharing the proceeds from the dodgy photos. At the moment I am exiled and unlikely to get anywhere near Blighty unless I win the lottery but one of those days...

Now familiar with the ropes after the Basil Copper signing, I left work early and turned up at 2pm. The BFS contingent were setting up down the end so I had a couple of pints (exhausting my meagre budget while waiting for the heavy mob to arrive). As they were presumably still chained to the railings in suffrage for Pierce Nace to get a knighthood for services to literature, at 2.30 I mooched down to see what was going on. A personable young man in a Dawn Of The Dead t-shirt nodded and smiled hello. I asked him if Justin Marriott or Charles Black were around. He asked me who I was (to my surprise). Turned out it was none other than Johnny Allthingshorror ! (Since he posted his picture here he has lost an incredible amount of weight, had a drastic haircut and shave and grown younger - no wonder I didn't recognise him) We retired to the back of the pub and he regaled me with tales of his Earls Court mission that morning, meeting John Hurt, Tom Savini and a hare krishna. As the speeches, readings and pleas to buy stuff began, a tidal wave of Guinness flowed down the bar, followed by Dem (in full-on black studded t-shirt Iggy Pop guise) and Andy (in full-on Harold Shand/Vic Dakin East End Ganglord mode), followed by an aftershock of Zoider as Justin had made it. Justin manfully stood up and delivered an impassioned Paperback Fanatic speech (although the 'pretentious' and 'any novel over 128 pages' comments may have caused a bit of a stir). Then (Gawd bless 'im) Johnny got up on spec and delivered a much shorter but equally impassioned speech on behalf of Charles, Paul Mudie and The Black Book(s) Of Horror. There was some interesting stuff going on - Dennis Wheatley got mentioned twice - once by a lovely little lady from Gollancz who struggled through an enormous list of their authors who'd been nominated despite Dem's best efforts to put her off by continually barging past with more Guiness. After all the fuss, Charles rolled in (immaculate timing!) and the little corner of Ye Olde Cock became a kind of live action Vault for a couple of hours. Great to meet Justin, Johnny and Chas - Dem and Andy on top form - what was all that about being 15% bent, Dem?
PS A big big thanks to Simon Clark for joining us for while

It was brilliant to see you all on Saturday though i'm a bit .... concerned. I arrived home with a jumper tied around my waist with know idea how or what it was doing there. It's an Urban Spirit job, navy and bright blue. If anyone would like to claim it, please contact me (PM is best: the not very good O*an*e still haven't sorted out my internet connection) or else I'll take it back to the pub! These get-togethers are such a thrill and I thank you people for your kindness and patience with my, uh, *demeanor* (I couldn't help but notice that both Mr. Horror and Mr. Fanatic gave their promo talks when I was safely out front having a crafty fag! ) . It's always a great thrill hanging around with Franklin and Pulphack (who seems to have been taking tips on sartorial elegance from Lord Probert), and meeting Charles, Johnny and Justin for the first time was just such a thrill! And yeah, that was tops when Simon Clark came over - what a friendly guy! Also Chris Fowler was doing the rounds, managed to get in a small chat with him before i lost the power of coherent speech. I have NO IDEA how i got home, nor how come tons of books were about my person though I guess a shameless raid of the display table is a distinct possibility. Thanks, gents!

well, it was a splendid afternoon. that blue top is johnny's, i think, which he left behind. and yep, we did raid the table - you got told off by that officious sod doing the pr, and then he walked away and we took them all again. shameful...
nice to meet johnny and charles, and always a pleasure to see franklin and justin. as for dem, well... say no more, alright?
like franklin, i felt sorry for the gollancz girl who struggled gamely while we yammered loudly, but then she's a publishers rep and was probably paid for the day, so what does she care? simon clark was a lovely bloke. franklin brought him over (i think) and there was no talk of books, just of hawkwind and the pink fairies (he was so glad to meet fellow hawks fans that when i bumped into him in the gents later he continued with a discussion about whether or not anyone could uncover pink fairies footage for a dvd release). simon was so nice i might even check out his work, now! never read him before, but it's GOT to be alright... rare that i read someone who isn't dead, so maybe he should be worried.
i won't mention franklin and dem discussing martian dance (oops, just did) and their 'ironic' cover of 'let's twist again'...

After looking at the photograph a wave of relief swept over me. I had no idea that one had to be actually dead to participate in the event.
