I do think it's worth reading them in context, but individual episodes ("The White Powder", "The Black Seal") began to be anthologised as early as the twenties, presumably with Machen's approval. That is comforting to hear. Tales . . . was published one year after Machen's death, and I was afraid the publisher had taken liberties. But even if the first two tales may not be presented in an entirely pure way, this is still a convenient collection that gathers together a lot of material.

Radio Four has a programme about Arthur Machen ( Arthur in the Underworld) next Thursday (4th July). I wonder if he meets Kate Beckinsale. It's at 11.30 in the morning and the details can be found here: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0368kp6

I was very disappointed by Arthur in the Underworld. It had very little to say about his stories and seemed to be more about trees than Arthur.

There is that. I just found it very restful to listen to. Even with quotes from the Great God Pan.

Can anyone help identify a small-press magazine article specifically about Arthur Machen's The Three Impostors? The book is named in the title of the article, which is called something like "Another Look at The Three Impostors". The article does exist. I think it was written in the 1990s, but I can't remember any details or where I saw the reference. Google has failed me.

Can't say for sure but it sounds very much the type of article Mark Valentine & Roger Dobson's Aklo (1988-1998) would run, Just checked and it isn't in the first 4 (though the Winter 1990 issue includes A Preface to The Three Imposters by Machen himself). Anyone have copies of #5 and #6 they can consult? Mark Samuels would know!

I don't think I'll ever see it. An American dealer has Machenalia II for sale at £83.81!!!

I've received the article on The Three Impostors (so thanks to James). I've only skimmed over it but it looks very interesting. I wanted to read it as "The Novel of the Black Seal" within the book is the supernatural story which has stuck most in my mind. I first read it in Dorothy L. Sayers's Great Short Stories of Detection, Mystery & Horror (one of those books which seem to have been printed musty). I have two annotated versions of The Three Impostors (Everyman, 1995) and (Chaosium, 2007 reprint). The latter, edited by S.T. Joshi, is the best. It also contains additional stories. Contents: Introduction The Great God Pan The Inmost Light The Shining Pyramid The Three Impostors It is now available at a reduced price from the publisher: www.chaosium.com/the-three-impostors-other-stories/
