N. Dennett's "Unburied Bane" was also anthologized in Tales of Witchcraft edited by the late, lamented Richard Dalby. Unlike most of the books discussed in these august catacombs, I actually own a copy of this one. I think I did read "Bane" a few years ago but so shockingly horrific an experience was it that I have no actual memory of the event. So must read again. cheers, H. I just read this last week in its translation for the first time. Creepy. (That you mention it today, but the story was also okay. For something originally appearing in a British anthology it was surprisingly American. My first guess was Weird Tales and not Creeps, before I read it up.)

Hey! It's October again! What a perfect month to try and read 31 short horror stories. Just like last year.OK. October 1st - nearest anthology is Pan 3. Flicking through the contents, I realised I 'd been enjoying recent repeats of a series called The Nightmare Worlds Of H G Wells, 4 adaptations of Wells' stories, with a bizarre piece of stunt casting - Ray Winstone as HG himself. Don't think I have any of the stories adapted, but there's one of his stories in the first book I pick up - The Cone! Huzzah! Ray would be good as Mr Horrocks in this - a hulking ironworks owner who returns unexpectedly as his soon-to-be ex-wife and lover are discussing their future plans. They jump at the click of the door closing. Ulp! How much did he hear? Raut, the lover, reminds the brute that he'd been promised a tour of the ironworks to feast his artistic sensibilities upon the interplay of smoke and light. Horrocks agrees, and off they go....cracking piece of interplay before the husband and lover leave...what does Horrocks know? It's bound to end badly....
