Man's Daring, January 1962This thread was not prompted in any way by Coral and Caroline's tasteless comments about castration on... oh, on some other thread. No, not at all. Just to prove that this thread is not at all sexist, here is a cover of Man's Life, just for the girls. Gosh, look at that. Of course, these used to be in all the corner shop windows back in the 50s and 60s. Stag, Men Only, Nazi's threatening women with glowing hot pokers or burying them in cement. It didn't do us any harm being subjected to these images. Of course not. Made me the man I am today.

I'm assuming these must be rare as hen's teeth now. Did the stories live up to the covers Rog?

I'm assuming these must be rare as hen's teeth now. Did the stories live up to the covers Rog? I vaguely remember reading a copy of Stag. The war stories I think were pretty grim; I remember a story of a spy being drowned in a sewage tank. The sex stuff was pretty laughable, like stories of nymphomaniacs who were obliged to throw themselves at every man in sight, until the writer suddenly realised he was running out of space and had her meet a garage mechanic who 'cured' her by being all she desired. I shouldn't admit it, but I'm afraid I only bought the one. One of my most vivid memories was passing a corner shop in Plymouth with a load of these on display in the window... along with a paperback of Still Not at Night. Years later, I found the paperback, thank heaven. I really had to stop myself posting some of these here, just in case it caused problems. You'd have to see how grisly some of these are to believe it. They simply couldn't display those hot poker and cement baths covers today, and I definitely balked at posting one picture here. But make up your own mind, and basically it's the visual equivelant of some of the stories we've raved over here. here's a link. As to whether they're rare, I noticed some on eBay while I was searching. No idea how much they were asking.

Crikey Rog, I see what you mean, some of those are fairly close to the bone. Apart the the one you read, I wonder if the rest were as horrendous as the covers suggest, has anyone else read these?

I've noticed certain recurrent themes here: a) A woman must be buxom b) Members of The Axis powers have to smile gleefully c) Real men grit their teeth
It occurs to me that the men who read these magazines might not have been quite like the heroes they portrayed and may well have been about thirteen years old

You are always in my thoughts, too. xxxx It occurs to me that the men who read these magazines might not have been quite like the heroes they portrayed and may well have been about thirteen years old Um... I think I was 12. I wish I'd bought a cellarful of these while I had the chance!

Looking at that last cover as an example don't you just remember wishing that you had been trapped by the 'lust crazed goddesses of the temple of love' at least once or twice a day; and wouldn't you really want to know even now what the 'abnormal sex impulses' were.

Looking at that last cover as an example don't you just remember wishing that you had been trapped by the 'lust crazed goddesses of the temple of love' at least once or twice a day... This is a trick question, isn't it? Let me just think about that for a while... ...and wouldn't you really want to know even now what the 'abnormal sex impulses' were. I figure we have those all the time. We just get our faces slapped when we try them. P.S: I'll obviously have to invest in that book Ade found at Amazon. Searching around the site I linked, I note comments that the interiors could never live up to the covers.

I *probably* saw some of these for sale in Blackpool back in the mid 1970's - though I was only looking for American comics at the time. I remember one dingy shop that had piles of mags/comics and had stuff like these plastered all over the walls - always felt a bit self conscious entering the place -lol Lots of True Crime mags too - they seemed to be everywhere and yeah STAG - I recall that and MEN ONLY ... ahem.
