Hello.
I'm really looking forward to the complete translation of THE VAMPIRE. Its the only one of the Frank Braun novels I have yet to read. I found the other two in academic libraries. The entire trilogy is in Karl Edward Wagner's "essential" list.

Very little Hanns Heinz Ewers material is available online these days and in addition to my translations I'm trying to make it easier for those that prefer to read the original in German to find online material. The following texts have been made available courtesy of:

It's not a paperback by any means but I just have to mention that I've been up most of the night reading the quite brilliant Alraune , purchased from the SideReal stand at World Horror.

I didn't need any converting after the first HH Ewers Sidereal volume but this novel really is marvellous, cruel, decadent, perverse stuff.

I bought my copy at WHC too. And a beautiful looking book it is as well. Almost too beautiful to open!

That's near the top of my to be read pile, just as soon as I've finished Shaun Jeffrey's The Kult and the remaining stories in The Sixth Black Book of Horror and Back from the Dead. (Not to mention all those other brilliant books on sale at WHC!)

Interesting, though, to consider how German cinema posters were quite different from British ones of that era. I don't know with any positive knowledge on this, but I would find it difficult to imagine something like this little beauty going up in Britain at that time.

I don´t know much about the movies of this time or their marketing, but this must have been the last hurrah for that kind of cinema advertising. One of the first things the Nazis did was to take over the entertainment industry, and such posters wouldn´t have been possible any longer. Or this kind of content.

Artistically the time of the Weimar Republic was - at least for those wacky artists - a possibilty to experiment. While Britain was a center of moral and values.

It is hard to remain neutral about Ewers, to judge him alone on his literary merits. It was his own choice to get into bed with the nazis, which makes him a nice example for the lousy judgement too many of his contemporaries had. On the other hand he paid dearly for it.
