Poor mr Demonik, I wondered where you were. The time before last that I was in the hospital I brought home pneumonia too. Beware when you have to go back, I've also brought home flu, gastroenteritis and even scabies. I spend a lot of time in hospital, and I can vouch for the fact that they are some of the dirtiest, badly run places in the UK!!! Sorry, rant over, I'm sending you a supernatural get better vibe, woooooooo...

when they were putting me under, i had a fit of the giggles and i imagined steve's face looming over me; 'let me through, I'm a paperback fanatic' ..... (true!) I think that probably counts as a near-death experience... Get well very soon, my decaying friend.

anyway, hopefully see you at basil copper on saturday. bear in mind, if you do have pneumonia, this could be a claim to fame: 'i killed off ageing author at his own booklaunch'...

Eeek!
I'd just like to say that I signed the petition and didn't break an arm, so don't be put off.
Poor ole Dem. Don't worry, we'll take good care of you. Now, where's that chainsaw?

thanks for all the kind wishes. troo, i'll thank you to keep that chainsaw to yourself or possibly save it for that fellow who lifted craig's work. coral, i'm well sorry to hear of your bad experiences but in my case, no complaints. the staff at the royal london were lovely and i already had suspected pneumonia [since downgraded to chronic bronchitis, i think] and a lousy virus before i went in. i'm now feeling far better than at any time since christmas and thoroughly enjoying pulling ever more tragic poses - i bet you girls are dead jealous of my wife who sits here rolling her eyes at my every new martyred expression. [i've been practicing in front of the mirror. does this one come over very 'i'm suffering!' or is it a bad look for me? hey, i'm a bloke. it's my duty to milk it].
andy and franklin; i've bumped the baz copper thread so if anybody wants to suggest some tenuous 'arrangements'?
and let's not lose sight of what this thread began life as before hijack by drama queen. signing that petition seems the right thing to do whichever way you look at it.

Mind you, us girls expect that kind of behaviour from you fellas, so when our partners start playing up like that, we don't really take a lot of notice. And, yes, back to ... and let's not lose sight of what this thread began life as before hijack by drama queen. signing that petition seems the right thing to do whichever way you look at it.

You signed a petition asking the Prime Minister to "retain the current funding level for Public Lending Right in the years 2008/09 - 2010/11." The Prime Minister's Office has responded to that petition and you can view it here: “We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to retain the current funding level for Public Lending Right in the years 2008/09 - 2010/11.” Details of Petition: “PLR’s funding settlement for the three year period 2008/09 - 2010/11 has been announced by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The figures are as follows: 2007/08 (current funding) = £7,682,000 2008/09 = £7,432,000 2009/10 = £7,582,000 2010/11 = £7,682,000 A reduction in PLR funding will adversely affect the earnings of thousands of UK authors and illustrators. Many are self-employed, and in an industry as unpredictable as publishing, the annual PLR payment is a highly valued and reliable contribution to earnings. The Government is urged to retain the current funding level (2007/08) for PLR for each of the next three years. There should be no reduction in funding.” The Government’s responseThe Department for Culture, Media and Sport does understand how many authors significantly depend on Public Lending Rights (PLR) payments for income. The Government remains firmly committed to the PLR scheme, and since April 2008 has worked with the PLR on a number of efficiency measures to ensure that the organisation spends the minimum amount possible on administration. Consequently, in 2008/09 the rate per loan has been maintained. It is now not possible to reopen the PLR’s funding allocation until the next Government Spending Review. Making funding allocations always involves weighing priorities, and in the circumstances of the last spending round, the allocation made to the PLR represented a fair settlement given the broad range of competing pressures. The Government has demonstrated its support for PLR and for writers through significant increases in previous spending rounds - in 2002/03 funding was increased by 35%, from £5.2m to £7m, and in 2000/01 the rate per loan increased by 58%, from 2.67p to 4.21p. www.number10.gov.uk/Page18782Prime Minister's Office Petition information - petitions.number10.gov.uk/plr-funding/
