Here's the first of two anthologies Rick Ferreira put together for Kimber: A Chill to the Sunlight: Tropical Stories of the Macabre (William Kimber, 1978): (cover: Peter Archer) R. Chetwynd-Hayes - A Chill to the Sunlight Jean Rhys - The Day They Burned the Books Clark Ashton Smith - The Seed from the Sepulchre Shiva Naipaul - A Man of Mystery Ken Kessler - Butterfly Chase T.K. Brown III - Haunts of the Very Rich Richard Davis - The Clump Peter C. Smith - One Last Embrace Evelyn Waugh - The Man Who Liked Dickens Peter Burton - The Sun Never Forgets Elinor Mordaunt - The Recall Henry S. Whitehead - Jumbee Lady Eleanor Smith - No Ships Pass It's kind of a shame Ferreira didn't include his own 'The Girl From Tomango' - that story would've made a great cover!

I can't include a scan of the dust jacket for this one, because my copy doesn't have one, but here's the TOC for Bull's Upon the Midnight: An Anthology of Ghost and Horror Stories (Macdonald, 1957):
William Hope Hodgson: The Voice in the Night Sir Gilbert Campbell, Bart.: The White Wolf of Kostopchin J.B. Priestley: The Demon King "A Lady": The Parlour Car Ghost H. de Vere Stacpoole: The Middle Bedroom Theo Gift: Dog or Demon Graham Greene: A Little Place Off the Edgware Road Arnold Bennett: The Murder of the Mandarin Amelia B. Edwards: The Four-Fifteen Express Georgina C. Clark: A Life-Watch John Moore: Decay J.J. Curle: Awake - Asleep - Awake Norman Edwards: The Flagstone Robert W. Chambers: The Messenger Clemence Dane: Nightly She Sings Elizabeth Gaskell: The Squire's Story
It's nowhere near as strong a selection as Perturbed Spirits, but there are a few recognized classics, and the Stacpoole is another of the relatively obscure stories John Pelan selected for his Century's Best Horror Stories.

I rate Williamson's first two Masques anthologies - I was weaned on these, along with whatever Charles L. Grants and Peter Hainings I could find at my local library.
Volumes III and IV weren't quite as good, a handful of decent stories but far too many forgettable ones, and I haven't read the fifth volume, published as a limited edition last year (or the year before?)
Nice to see some of my favorites from I and II made the cut for this 'best of' selection - the Etchison, Campbell, Rodgers and Grant tales, especially.

I don't think I've seen this one mentioned here, another fine anthology from Netherwood ( Uncanny, Medley Macabre): Bryan A. Netherwood, Ed.: Terror! (Blackie & Sons, 1970) (cover: John Dyke) Rudyard Kipling - The Mark of the Beast Algernon Blackwood - A Haunted Island Mrs Edith Bland - No.17 Elliott O'Donnell - The Top Attic in Pringle's Mansion, Edinburgh William H. Hodgson - The Derelict E. & H. Heron - The Story of the Moor Road Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - The Brown Hand J. Sheridan Le Fanu - The White Cat of Drumgunniol Edward L. White - Amina H. R. Wakefield - Professor Pownall's Overnight Jasper John - The Seeker of Souls M.R. James - Lost Hearts R. H. Malden - The Blank Leaves M.P. Dare - Borgia Pomade Sir Andrew Caldecott - Authorship Disputed Marjorie Bowen - Scoured Silk H.P. Lovecraft - The Colour Out of Space Lord Dunsany - The Shield of Athene William C. Dickinson - The House of Balfother Robert Aickman - Ringing the Changes I'm a big fan of Netherwood's anthologies, not least because he seemed to favour the kind of 'Jamesian' ghost stories I've always enjoyed.

demonik, At Close of Eve is an all-fiction anthology, as far as I can remember - it's a while since I first read it. I think The Mandrake Root may be all-fiction too (I was going to post that cover as well, but the copy I thought I had turned out to be a copy of something else. Are you thinking of Kay Dick's The Uncertain Element? That one does have some non-fiction; I definitely do have a copy - somewhere. I'll post the cover and TOC once I find it...

Ok, this one's 1979, but anyway: Stories of the Supernatural (William Kimber, 1979) (cover: Ionicus) Frank Baker - Tyme Tryeth Troth Roald Dahl - The Sound Machine Antonia Fraser - Whose Been Sitting in My Car? William Trevor - George and Alice and Isabel Ann Bridge - The Song in the House A.L. Rowse - The Beneficent Shoes L.P. Hartley - The Travelling Grave Christine Brooke-Rose - On Terms Charles Causley - Looking for Annie Ronald Blythe - A Bit Simple A.L. Barker - The Crab James Turner - Double Take Fred Urquhart - Water Water Wallflower Most of these authors crop up again and again in Val Baker's anthologies - quite a few were part of the Kimber stable - but as usual there's a couple of older reprints.

I probably haven't done myself any favors resurrecting it, because that cover gave me nightmares. Genuine, 'I don't care if it's only ten to 3 in the morning, there's no way I'm going back to sleep' nightmares...

This is the only one of Smith's Kimber anthologies that I've read, but it's a pretty good one: Undesirable Properties (William Kimber, 1977) (cover: Ionicus) H. I guess the skull is one of those stock images used to evoke horror, or the idea of death, but I don't find them particularly frightening. There must be a lot of books out there with skulls on 'em... For truly frightening cover art - at least it's a cover image that scared the crap out of me the first time I saw it - check this out: panhorrors.wordpress.com/2007/08/31/john-burke-more-tales-of-unease/Still creeps me out...
