Might possibly be The Microwave Caper by Joseph Tabler. The front cover has a melting face but the back cover does have a man standing next to a device.

The mysterious world of Australian cinema! I saw an Australian film once. I think it was about a young man who went somewhere to be a schoolteacher. I think the twist was that a brother and sister that he got to know had an incestuous relationship. Can you identify the film? I'm pretty sure that film is Summerfield (1977).

I'm still a little lost as to what years Monster Mag was originally publishing. First I picked up was issue 6 - anyone know when that hit the newsagents? The publication dates are... Vol.1 - Issue 1 & 2 (1973), Issue 3 - 13 (1974), Issue 14 (1975) Vol.2 - Issue 1 (Jun 1976), Issue 2 (Jul 1976), Issue 3 (Sep 1976)

A bit of a late reply and a long shot but could it be, "Out of Times Abyss" by Edgar Rice Burroughs? I seem to recall that featured bat people, one of which being large.

The Deadly Spring by J.C. Conaway Leisure (1976) blurb... THE WATER OF DEATH
Cheat Holler, West Virginia was located near a military bas conducting secret experiments in chemical warfare. Through a bizarre accident, a deadly drug was released into the town town's water supply. It affected the minds of everyone who drank the water – releasing the savage and sadistic urges normally kept hidden under the veneer of society.Contaminated water causes the locals to go gaga and start killing each other and shagging each other more than usual. There's loads of sex in this book, if they're not having sex they're thinking about sex, if they're not thinking about sex they're writing about sex. This is BEFORE they even taste the contaminated water. There's a couple of quite nice death scenes in this, one involving a wig adorned teacher and her pupils, and another featuring an old lady and her chickens (yep, it's got killer chickens!)

Claw Hammer by Paul Dale Anderson Pinnacle (1989) blurb... Something hunts the night. Relentless, inhumanly cunning, it stalks the serene streets and elegant houses of the quiet Illinois suburb, shattering its victims' skulls and flaying the flesh from their still-living bodies in a maniacal, blood-drenched frenzy. Now a dedicated cop and a brilliant young doctor will risk everything to run an elusive, insanely savage horror to earth. Their only clue : a beautiful girl, scarred body and soul by a hideous past she can't escape and by an evil that possesses her still. Their only hope: untangling the dark, terrifying secrets of her past in a desperate race to uncover the truth. But very soon their quarry will make them the hunted, trapping them in a nightmarish choice between an unspeakable death – or endless, mind-ripping agony...Another gem of a nasty from Pinnacle. A little girl survives her fathers attack on her with a claw hammer after he does away with her mother. Years later, still bearing the scars on her body from the attack she is invited to the school prom by the head jock. Now a killer is stalking her friends and family and despatching them in gruesome ways with a claw hammer.

I own Raw Pain Max but haven't got around to reading it yet. I must bump it up the pile. If it's supposed to be nastier, I can't wait to sample the delights contained within!

Entangled by Paul Jason and Jeffrey Sager Sphere (1984) blurb... Once upon a time Diana Stewart had been a carefree New York Career girl with a wealthy fiancé, a fulfilling job, a glamorous lifestyle...
Then the attacks began.
Frenzied, motiveless, obscene attacks on her property and person that steadily transformed her perfect life into a spiralling nightmare of madness, terror and hate.
Who was doing this to her? And why? For some, the worst part would have been not knowing.
For Diana, the worst part was finding out...A one legged psychopath starts obsessing over the perfect life of Diana and becomes jealous, very jealous, so jealous in fact, she wants her perfect leg for herself! You can spot the twist a mile off but it's a reasonably entertaining story, with everyone thinking our leading lady is going insane and doing everything that happens herself. I had to laugh when our nutter bludgeoned to death a poor security guard with her false leg.

The Street by Garry Douglas Grafton (1988) ANGRY ASHALT
The roads that made up the new Diamond Estate were all named named after gems, There was Emerald Avenue, Ruby Close, Garnet Crescent... and Bloodstone Street.
It started on the day the Peter family moved in. Patty was lying in the road and when her father made her get up her body left a damp imprint on the asphalt.
'Look, Daddy,' she said, 'the street is crying.'
But within days the tarmac was bubbling with a malevolent will of its own, sucking at the feet of unwary pedestrians, chopping at the arms of maintenance workers and redirecting the wheels of speeding cars.
The residents of Bloodstone Street had moved into open plan suburbia – only to find themselves trapped in a cul-de-sac of terror...Killer tarmac controlled by a coven of witches. The premise alone made this one worth reading.

Pitfall by Ronald Kelly Zebra (1990) blurb... BLOOD SPORT
They were called diablos hoyos. Vicious black-furred beasts that fought in the pit with the raw fury and savage ferocity of Satan himself. For their owners, they were a lucrative investment. For the people of Sulphur springs, Texas, they were the best entertainment they'd had in a long while. For Bowie Kane, they were his darkest nightmare come true. He alone recognized the dark and ravenous evil that his Apache ancestors had foretold. But Bowie Kane was an outsider in Sulphur Springs. No one would listen to his warnings. And now it was too late to avert the rampage of carnage and terror unleashed on an unsuspecting town.Tasmanian Devils, purchased with view to fighting them like dogs, escape the thick hicks who own them, run amok and slaughter the townsfolk. There's some truely reprehensible characters in this that thoroughly deserve what they have coming.

Joyride by Stephen Crye Pinnacle (1983) blurb... HE WAITS. HE WATCHES. HE KILLS.
Nine teenagers enter an abandoned cemetery to celebrate their high school graduation. Before the night is over, most of them will die.
JOYRIDE THE ULTIMATE TERROR TRIP
MORE HORRIFYING THAN HALLOWEEN MORE GRISLY THAN FRIDAY THE 13THNow this is more like it! A gory tale in the vein of those wonderfully over the top early 80's slasher films. Here we have the obligatory disfigured mountain of a maniac picking off teens, who dared to enter his graveyard, in a variety of gruesome ways. He even abducts one of the nubile young ladies with a view to fornicating with her because he thinks shes the girl he had a crush on in school!

Torture Tomb by C. Dean Andersson Popular Library (1987) blurb... THE NIGHTMARE
For young artist Gina and her lover Jim, it began with a terrifying vision of Gina's long-missing sister, once thought dead, now a prisoner of a horror beyond imagining.
THE SEARCH
Their last hope – a circle of witches who command powers that can help and heal – or wreck terrible destruction. Their destination – the dark heart of a New England Forest where an evil dynasty built upon the unspeakable secrets of the damned plans a hellish fate for all who oppose it.
THE BATTLE
Hounded by foul manifestations of the undead, in peril of losing both their lives and souls, Gina and her allies must race against time and terror to confront their demonic enemies... and battle a monsterous inhuman force that may crush even the combined forces of light.Probably one of the nastiest books to come out of the 80's. A girl is abducted by three psychopaths to be frequently tortured/raped in a makeshift medieval dungeon, for the purpose of making a snuff film. One of the maniacs even has his wife thrown in to be tormented. There's some very long and nasty torture scenes in here, though the sex is briefly passed. There's a bit of other nonsense involving our victims sister and psychics/witches and the search to find her. A grim delight!
