I haven't seen it mentioned here yet but I read that Mr. Weighell passed away on Christmas Eve. Just incredibly sad news.

Can anyone recommend any JG Ballard stories that cross into horror? The Dead Astronaut

Yes, although the Warrens seem to have had much less involvement in investigating the Enfield case than they claimed. They apparently turned up uninvited at the house, but were not allowed in. You are 100% right about the "levitations" too. This is one of many similar photographs that were presented at the time as evidence of "paranormal activity" - You must apply insane amounts of hair spray/hair gel to pull those levitation pictures off convincingly. Bloody amateurs. Mr Happy

The majority of the other stories are crime/suspense oriented but almost all feature some horrific moments. While there is nothing near the level of The Babysitter I still recommend this one as Gray was an excellent wordsmith and her stories are always enjoyable.

From Hugh Lamb's introduction to The James Gang (Haunted library, 1991) Did anyone identify the story? I'm curious about this as well

I certainly hope that's not the case.

Quick favor to ask: in the latest issue of Ghosts and Scholars there was a slip of paper included that listed a paypal address for future issues. Can someone post that as I seem to have lost it.
Thank you in advance!

Does anyone at all know where I might be able to find a copy of this book? ('The Dark Side'). I had it for years and years, but I lost it sometime last year, and I really miss it lol Admittedly, I'm about 20 years too old for it now, but I still really like the stories, and I would like to re-read them all!! I just can;t seem to find mine anywhere!! There is currently one listed on ABEbooks for less than $10. But just one. Mr Happy

Basil A. Smith - The Propert Bequest: I have come to love the M.R.James tale. While I would complain that this is just too long for its plot, one keeps on reading. I often wonder how much this England of priests and academics has roots in reality or is just made up. Definitely a little overlong but it has a distinct charm to it. It covers some of the bases that I find enjoyable in this type of tale: the internal mechanics/politics of higher education, rare tomes, hidden doors, small passages of time where seemingly innocent events transpire that connect to a darker whole amd a ghastly thing lurking in the shadows. Great fun. The Scallion Stone, Smith's posthumous collection of five tales that Russel Kirk championed, is enjoyable but this tale is definitely the cream of the crop although the title story comes really, really close! Robert Morgan updated the Sarob Press Blog today with the news that his most recent title, The Pale Illuminations (which is tremendous), has already sold out and that his next release (by C. E. Ward) will be titled Legionnaire. This is intriguing as it does not sound like the title of a collection. Are we possibly getting a longer peice by Mr. Ward this time? According to the blog we will find out in around a week or so.

I am very sorry to hear this and I hope things do improve. I think my wife dropped money for the upcoming issue in the post this past weekend but if it can't be fulfilled I completely understand. And do not bother returning the funds either. Your publication has given me more joy than you can imagine. Please take care and you and your family are in our thoughts.

Thank you for the update and I am certain that I will enjoy it. The postal service here in Kentucky can be a little erratic at times but it appears that it made its way through the system rather quickly. Mr. Happy The newsletter arrived today and I am looking forward to reading it. In trying to make a listing of all of Mr. Ward's short fiction this is what I have so far: Vengeful Ghosts (Sarob Press 1998) Includes: Old Martin Gunpowder Plot Caveat Emptor Branks's Folly The Spinney Doctor's Orders Mirror Image The Lake Seven Ghosts and One Other (Sarob Press 2010) Includes: The Doorway of St. Stephen's The Game of Bear The Short Cut Not Found Among You The Particular The Guardian Mariner's Rest Behind the Curtain Malevolent Visitants (Sarob Press 2016) Includes: At Dusk The Mound Merfield Hall The Return Squire Thorneycroft One Over the Twelve The House of Wonders The Gift Uncollected short fiction: End of the Line (All Hallows #19) 11334 (The Ghosts & Scholars Book of Shadows Vol. 2) A Wrong Turn (The Silent Companion #10) Twenty Years Afterwards (The Ghosts & Scholars Book of Shadows Vol. 3) Assizes (The Ghosts & Scholars M.R. James Newsletter Issue 31) Have I missed anything? If so, please let me know. Mr. Happy Edited to add A Wrong Turn (The Silent Companion #10 2014) to the list. With Ro dropping the exciting news of a new story in the upcoming G&S and Sarob releasing a 4th book hopefully at the end of this year, this list of C.E. Ward fiction will be edited again very soon.
