I think we all know what the most famous lost horror film is. But do you know others? And do you know any that were lost then later found, perhaps in strange circumstances.
I'm thinking of The Ghoul, the 1933 Boris Karloff movie that was thought lost, found as a poor copy in Czechoslovakia in 1969, then later found in a perfect nitrate negative in the 1980s. The Czech version was released on VHS and only later was the restored version released.

I think somebody on here said if it was found it would most likely only disappoint.

Here is one I found. The Cat Creeps from 1930. I'm not sure it can be described as a horror as such. wiki says: American pre-Code mystery film directed by Rupert Julian based on the 1922 play The Cat and the Canary by John Willard. The film is a sound remake of The Cat and the Canary (1927) Of the original the 1927 The Cat and the Canary it says: Annabelle inherits her uncle's fortune, but when she and her family spend the night in his haunted mansion they are stalked by a mysterious figure. Meanwhile, a lunatic known as "the Cat" escapes from an asylum and hides in the mansion. The film is part of a genre of comedy horror films inspired by 1920s Broadway stage plays.

Batman Fights DraculaThe below contains a spoiler, which doesn't matter as the film is lost. From wiki: Batman Fights DrƔcula is a 1967 Filipino film directed by Leody M. Diaz and scripted by Bert R. Mendoza. The film, which was not authorized by DC, is thought to be lost. The story concerned the mad scientist named Dr. Zorba who, after repeatedly being defeated by Batman, finds a way to resurrect the wicked Count Dracula, control him, and even make him stronger, rendering him invincible towards traditional ways of killing him, such as Christian crosses. After tracking down Zorba at his underground fortress, Ruben (a character based on the existing sidekick Robin) and the beautiful Marita manage to kill the evil doctor by turning the vampire against him.

It seems amazing that films that seem fairly recent can be lost, but I suppose if they are small productions with limited release it could occur.

Kochanka Szamoty 1927 (Szamota's Mistress) Director Leon Trystan, based on story by Stefan GrabiÅski
Shamota receives a letter with an offer of a meeting from the famous Polish beauty Jadwiga. He enjoys happiness for a whole year. But there is an element of strangeness in their encounters. The beloved hides her body from him. Perhaps it does not seem to him that it is gradually disappearing.
the handsome actor who played Szamota died in that old war that we missed
Kochanka

I notice his "Vampires of Warsaw" is also lost; it seems to have been a murder-mystery with no vampire content.

I got the restored bluray version of The Ghoul, which is excellent to watch, though the cop out at the end is unfortunate. Even so Karloff looks amazingly gruesome as "the ghoul".

It is very likely that these films were deliberately lost in order to erase the traitor's name from memory.

I see; so they had "cancel culture" even back then. He deserved his fate, although I don't agree with erasing films or books because the actor/writer acted "objectionably". I believe the Soviets did such things, or at least in photographs:

They did the same with the living, sometimes it is impossible to find out what happened to a person.

Der Januskopf 1920 Director F.W. Murnau with Bela Lugosi as Dr. Warren's Butler
"'Der Januskopf' is an adaptation of the Stevenson novel 'The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' (1886). To avoid having to pay for the rights of the original (again!), all the names were changed. Dr. Warren invents a serum that makes it possible to separate the evil and good sides of humanity. He tries it out on himself, with horrific consequences".
