Only two weeks into the year and already the strongest contender for personal favourite novel read in 2020. Where did you find this one? In one of those markets (Spitalfields?) you frequent? Some people have all the luck in the world! (You will be forgiven if you can get Valancourt to have it reissued, though.)

Only two weeks into the year and already the strongest contender for personal favourite novel read in 2020. Where did you find this one? In one of those markets (Spitalfields?) you frequent? Some people have all the luck in the world! (You will be forgiven if you can get Valancourt to have it reissued, though.) Yes, vast majority of the paperbacks come from market stalls, second hand bookshops, church jumble sales, charity shops, the bi-annual pulp & paperback fair etc., sometimes even pubs, once direct off the pavement, another out of a skip. Also library loans. Most of those on my shelf of shame - like this copy of Beyond the Door - are in a disgusting, pre-battered condition, no re-sale value whatsoever, and you cannot believe how happy this makes me. Haven't been in touch with Valancourt for ages, though there's nothing to prevent you contacting them. They've been very open to suggestion in the past, and 'Behind the Door' would be an ideal inclusion to their Paperbacks From Hell range. N.B. Sadly, many of the once reliable haunts in this neck of the woods are either gone or getting that way. Spitalfields Market was a happy hunting ground from circa the late 'eighties through to about three-four years ago. It has since been yuppified and streamlined, virtually every one of the old school traders have jacked it in, citing exorbitant rents and mustn't-upset-the-affluent-new-neighbours regulations: it's gone from among my favourite places in the locally to one of the most despised. The Sunday market at Sclater Street off Brick Lane is hanging on grimly, though it has been in depressing decline for a decade. Anyone know what Camden Market is like for books these days?

That's quite sad about the Spitalfields Market, Kev. Makes one long for the good old days of affixing a DIE YUPPIE SCUM or EAT THE RICH sticker to one's reticule by means of a couple of handy safety pins.
cheers, Steve
