I think I've mentioned to a few of you that I'm going to be moving, with consequent delay to the next Ghosts & Scholars. The move isn't happening now, or not for a while anyway (can't say I'm sorry!), so the delay is likely to be shorter than anticipated. I'm thinking the issue should be out in mid-late November, but certainly well before Christmas.
The non-fiction contents haven't been firmed up yet, but I can say that it'll be a bumper issue with new stories by Clive Ward and Victoria Day, along with an extra booklet containing "The Bishop's Inventory", a new novella by Jane Jakeman. Well, I've got to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of G&S, the fiftieth anniversary of my first fanzine Seagull, and the hundredth Haunted Library publication somehow!

Help! I have some very bad news. Due to family health problems, I don’t see any way that I'm going to be able to handle the mail-out of the next (and probably final) double issue of Ghosts & Scholars. I can finish off the issue and accompanying special booklet (in the next month or two) - no problem - but can anyone suggest someone who could deal with the printing, envelope stuffing and posting? I can provide the complete PDFs, and the mailing list and/or mailing labels. Plus, obviously, I'll cover all costs. I reckon there would be around 150 envelopes to mail. If the same or a different person(s) then wanted to take over the editorship (with me, perhaps, as contributing editor) that would be fine but it's in no way an essential part of the arrangement.

I am so sorry to hear that there is a health situation in your family, Ro. Hoping someone with a good heart will step forward to help.
Here's to better times for you and yours.
Best wishes,
Steve

I am very sorry to hear this and I hope things do improve. I think my wife dropped money for the upcoming issue in the post this past weekend but if it can't be fulfilled I completely understand. And do not bother returning the funds either. Your publication has given me more joy than you can imagine. Please take care and you and your family are in our thoughts.

Mr Happy The final issue will be a double so all one and two-issue subs will be fulfilled. About a dozen people will still have a credit but I can refund on request, of course (or hang on to the credit in the hope that G&S will reappear in some form in the future - or give to charity). I've had three offers of help with the final issue now so something will be worked out as far as that's concerned.

So glad to hear that you've got help, dear Rosemary! I lucked out recently and got a number of G&S back issues at reasonable prices, and they made me realise even more how great the 'zine has been. It's one of those "where was I when all these happened?" moments. It's not a cliche when we say you've left a legacy. Someday somewhere we will read something to the effect that "this piece was first published in Ghosts & Scholars, Rosemary Pardoe's legendary publication ..." Please take care, and know that many people have been moved by what you've done, although they don't seem to share anything common with you at first sight ... Found in an early issue of the legendary Ghosts & Scholars

I'm very sorry to read all of this. There is no publication of any kind that I reread as much as Ghosts & Scholars. It's also the only publication that I have had anything of any substance that I wrote myself printed. As an editor, Rosemary is a harsh mistress indeed with very high standards, and for that we should all be grateful. If Ghosts & Scholars 36 is going to be the last issue, its being the Haunted Library's 100th publication seems appropriate.

It looks as though there could be a future for G&S after all, though issue 36/37 will be the last under my editorship (I would still be involved). It's too early to be announcing anything definite, but don't give up on the magazine just yet!

It's too early to be announcing anything definite, but don't give up on the magazine just yet! Well, you did try to stop it once before! And there was also Formidable Visitants (i.e., Ghost & Scholars 0), and Spectral Tales 1 and 2, each covered already in the Vault.

It looks as though there could be a future for G&S after all, though issue 36/37 will be the last under my editorship (I would still be involved). It's too early to be announcing anything definite, but don't give up on the magazine just yet! Here we go! This is the full line-up for my final double issue (with extra booklet) of G&S (it should be going to the printer in the next few days). But keep reading for an announcement after the contents list! Ghosts & Scholars 36/37New Jamesian Fiction: "Autumn Harvest" by C.E. Ward (a Civil War tragedy blights an old orchard in terrifying fashion). "More about Miss Tweekweed" by Victoria Day (the back story of an intriguing character from "An Aunt's Tale" in G&S 35). Non-Fiction: "Crossing the Line: The Short Supernatural Fiction of John Gordon" by Benjamin Harris; "Two Lesser-Known John Gordon Novels" by Rosemary Pardoe; "Reality versus Illusion in Aickman's 'The School Friend'" by Rebekah Memel Brown. Lengthy News, "Jamesian Notes & Queries", Letters and Reviews sections. Supplement: The Bishop's Inventory by Jane Jakeman. This long, 11,000-word, story gets its own special booklet. Set in the sixteenth century, an inventory of a late bishop's goods has unexpected and disturbing consequences for the participants. The Bishop's Inventory is only available as a free supplement with G&S 36/37. (80 pages in all) The great news is that Mark and Jo Valentine have incredibly generously volunteered to take over the mail-out of this issue, after which they will continue in this role while (hopefully) a series of guest editors will be lined up for future issues. Several guest editors have provisionally agreed. I don't know exactly how much I'll be contributing as the family health situation isn't good, but rest assured I shan't be giving up altogether. Update: The first four guest editors have now been confirmed, starting with the Vault's very own James Doig! Spring 2020 - James Doig Autumn 2020 - Antonio Monteiro Spring 2021 - Helen Kemp Autumn 2021 - John Howard

Now I just need to figure out how to maintain the high standard you've set for 40 years.
