I have been holding off for several days mentioning this, perhaps in the hope that someone else would, but I feel I must let his friends know that Charles (real name Michael Duggan) is seriously ill with cancer. In fact, it's terminal. He's in a hospice and the doctors have stopped medication other than for painkillers and liquids.
This is terrible news and I hate having to break it here, but I know there are so many of his friends who deserve to know.
I intend to try and get to Hereford, where his hospice is, to see Charles for one last time.

It's utterly wretched news. Although I've never actually met him in person - and never knew his real name - via this place and quite a few emails I quickly realised that Charlie has always been one of the most decent, encouraging and helpful guys around. I'd heard he'd been diagnosed, but hadn't realised he was in a hospice. I emailed him only a little while ago just to say a few words. I hope you get to see him, David, and hope he has many friends around him.

I hope, David, that you're able to get to see Charles. Mark

I'm not on personal terms with Charles Black, or anyone else in book-producing business for that matter. But that's essentially irrelevant - this is wretched news for anyone. Sympathies.

I have only just come off the phone to St Michael's Hospice in Hereford hoping to arrange to visit Charles on Monday, only to be told that he passed away yesterday, peacefully, surrounded by his family. I am still in a bit of a state of shock after being told this, as I am sure his friends on the Vault will be too when they read this news. Seemingly it happened quite suddenly. Only the day before he felt well enough to sit up and use his computer. I am posting below one of the few photos I have of Charles from when he was on a panel of editors at the World Horror Convention in Brighton in 2010.

I am so sorry to hear it, David. I'm glad, at least, that his passing was peaceful and that he was surrounded by people who love him, but deeply saddened by his loss.
My sympathies to all who knew and were close to him.

I was looking for an obituary of Mr Black but was unable to find one. I did find this nice thread about a book he edited 3 years ago. I haven't read any of these as I generally don't find myself able to budget time and funds for current horror writing, but these do sound intriguing and fun. vaultofevil.proboards.com/thread/6114/charles-black-eleventh-book-horrorI really know nothing about Mr Black, but it seems as if he was terribly young. Whenever I write something like that, nevertheless, I recall a line in the film Parting Glances which has an added edge to it at the advanced age of 60 (which is quite a surreal age to be)--"I think dying's a bitch no matter how old you are." Love to all, Steve

I have all the volumes in this series except the very first; they are quite entertaining. If you come across any at a good price I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
The line you quoted is certainly true my condolences again to all who knew and loved Charles Black.
