There was a John Stewart who is billed as a 50s artist at the Isfdb. But only with three covers.
On Ebay Germany original genre art is offered at wildly different prices, from 50 to 1000 Euros. Art has its own sub-categorys. But even for the more recognizable cover paintings it is slow going.

Thanks Dr S, that must be him. There seems to be very little info about him online.

I was going to put the illustrations on ebay, but don't really know how to describe them - I can't find anything similar by the same artist. Graeme had art portfolios by the likes of Stephen Fabian, Virgil Finlay, Lee Brown Coye etc, but I could at least find similar examples and use those to crib descriptions, estimate price etc. And you're right about prices - some didn't sell at all, while others went for a few hundred!

Yes, this is much more likely then what I wrote.

Interesting sounding book which I presume must now be extremely rare.
I'd never heard of the Robert E. Howard story "The Palace of Bast." I wonder whether it has anything to do with the ancient Egyptian Goddess.

I'm wondering about that illustration for The Incredible Shrinking Man below - the words on the back might mean it was drawn especially for Graeme Flanagan (GF), Australia (Aus). But who knows...

Qua that drawing for The Incredible Shrinking Man--that strikes me as quite an unusual handling of that subject. I know nothing about Graham Flanagan but it might well have been done as a commission, as a gift, or with a specific individual in mind.
Wishing you all the best with the project. Thank you again, James, for being so generous in what you share here.
Best wishes,
Steve

I'd never heard of the Robert E. Howard story "The Palace of Bast." It's a poem apparently.

I'd never heard of the Robert E. Howard story "The Palace of Bast." It's a poem apparently. It is indeed. One of Howard's lush erotic verses. And if someone commissioned a "suite of illustrations" for it then they were obviously a real Howard devotee as the poem has been very sparingly published. Can't imagine many people would have even known of it prior to the publication of the COLLECTED POEMS by the REH Foundation. It first appeared in the 2nd issue of the magazine Chacal in 1977 and since then has only appeared twice that I know of. Firstly in a booklet with very limited circulation called Desire and Other Erotic Poems and lastly in that Foundation volume.
Stewart published a number of striking portfolios in Schiff's Whispers magazine. He has a real flair for the grotesque which falls somewhere between Pitts and Coye. I particularly like the one he did for Clark Ashton Smith's Averoigne.

That's very cool, Dr Strange. Thanks!
James, perhaps looking at the photo of what was written on the back of this one will help you with the captions or blurbs for these?
Best, Steve
