Pulp Horror 8Justin Marriott - EC Lives! Justin Marriott - Pulp Horror Reviews Justin Marriott - Crocodile Fears Ben Spurling - Sabat: The Man In Black Jim O' Brien - Daniel Farson's World Of Horror Tom Tesarek - Started So Late, Finished So Soon: Tom Reamy Andreas Decker - A Short History Of The Silber Grusel-Krimi Justin Marriott - Dobson's Challenge: Pulp Horror Reviews II Justin Marriott - The Hell-Fire Gallery Morgan Holmes - Shapes Of Midnight: Joseph Payne BrennanJust as I was congratulating myself on finally catching up with Mr. Fanatic's prodigious output, the sadistic git announced new issues of Paperback Fanatic and The Sleazy Reader! It seems Justin intended #8 as a Signet special until he read nine of their horror novels on the spin (including four by 'William Dobson') and decided against. To be honest, Killer Flies, Phone Call, The Ripper, Gila! et al sound quite interesting in a "no worse than the usual garbage many of us read" kind of way. Standout articles for me are .... well, most all of them, really. Jim O'Brien's piece on the life and macabre works of Dan Farson ( Transplant/ Curse/ The Dracula Business, etc); Tom Tesarek's celebration of Tom Reamy; Justin on croc & alligator thrillers; Andreas Decker on yet another impossibly long lived German pulp horror series; and Ben Spurling on Mark Sabat, former SAS man turned Psychic Detective, mad exorcist, scourge of all things Satanic, compulsive masturbator, & Co. My one minor criticism is that a few of the articles - Short History Of The Silber Grusel-Krimi to an extent and certainly the welcome appreciation of Joseph Payne Brennan - are maybe too concise, over just as you're getting into them.

Intriguing. It all sounds very interesting.
I seem to recall a thread or mention of the "Sabat--Man in Black" series here a year or two ago. I remember wondering if it was Witchcraft-themed, but typical of my sieve-like memory these days, can't recall what was shared about the books by folks who had read them.
And I'm sure Andreas's essay about another German pulp paperback series is well worth reading.
I was burned buying an issue of this publication through a popular online retail site last year. When the book arrived, although it was complete, the reprint lacked some of the articles that had been included in the original publication. It was really cheap (somewhere in the five to ten dollar range) so I felt I had no grounds to complain. But it has made me reluctant to order further issues as I presume versions are being run off over on this side of the Atlantic that do not have the full content.
I have out some of my old issues of Gore Creatures (the gorgeous Sixties/early Seventies zine that later morphed into the extremely slick, beautifully produced Midnight Marquee about halfway through the Seventies) and in an issue dated 1971, the editor is complaining that a person who is now an elder classic horror film critic, then aged probably around 18, had had the gall to charge 75 cents for his new zine which had only 20 pages of material, with terrible artwork, to boot. Just made me reflect how more a dollar used to be worth, back long ago in the Land that Time Forgot...

The discrepancy affects some Am*zon versions of the pre-2017 issues. Essentially, they've been condensed to fit the 'Am*z*n Fulfilment' template. The contents of all post-2017 House of Fanatic titles are as described on this forum.
