Here are the contents of the next and final Ghosts & Scholars M.R. James Newsletter (33), due out in March (don't panic - it's only the final one because, as of issue 34, the title will be reverting to Ghosts & Scholars):
New Jamesian Fiction: "The Whistle Thing" by Michael Chislett and "Unfinished Business" by Mark Nicholls (new spins on "Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad" and "Lost Hearts", by two of the most popular G&S authors).
Non-Fiction: "The Quest for Karswell: An Enquiry into Identity" by Paul M. Chapman (Was Karswell inspired by a real person? A new and convincing theory - not Aleister Crowley or Oscar Browning!). "Michael Harrison" by Rosemary Pardoe (Harrison was a prolific author on many esoteric subjects, but few people are aware that he also wrote a few Jamesian stories).
Plus the usual News and Reviews sections (there are a couple of "Jamesian Notes & Queries" pieces pending, but I'm not sure at this stage whether there'll be room for them in this issue).

That's very cool about the Karswell article. I was never convinced by the Crowley theory because the chronology of when the Master wrote the tale vs the trajectory of the Beast's public career simply does not fit.
Very pleased to hear you will continue, though I have yet to order a single issue, alas.
cheers, H.

It's at the printer now. The Vault gets a couple of mentions!

It's at the printer now. The Vault gets a couple of mentions! Excellent! Probably old news, but I had lunch with a couple of bookish types today, and they mentioned crime writer, Nicola Upson's latest book, Nine Lessons has strong MRJ interest.

Yes, Dan McGachey has reviewed it for the forthcoming issue.

I'm mailing out copies now. It may be a while before I get through them all: the issue is slightly ahead of schedule so I'm not rushing with the mail-out. But Kev, I think your copy was posted today.

That's just ridiculous. I don't approve. I think it's very steep too, but what can anyone do?

A lot cheaper than I've seen some of them on Amazon and AbeBooks, though it's the first time I've seen a few of them listed anywhere. Fantastic Literature have had copies of the first couple of Newsletters at £62 and £82 apiece, which even I baulked at.

I suppose it's true that a fair price is whatever the market will pay, but to anyone considering paying over - say - a tenner for any G&S Newsletter, I'd warn them that they're just not worth it!!

To put an end to about a dozen years of regularly checking eBay, Amazon and, latterly, AbeBooks for copies to fill some gaps in the collection, and having almost given up on any of the issues I needed materialising, I decided to take the plunge, though in full awareness of what I was buying. Needless to say, I'd have rather payed less than a tenner each, but rather that than kick myself if the ones I'd been looking for sold elsewhere and then I had another dozen or more years looking around for them. So I've closed the gap on the Newsletters and narrowed it slightly on G&S. Meanwhile, the latest - and last - Newsletter edition has turned up and looks tremendous. I'll look forward to immersing myself in the contents soon.

As of today I reckon I still have 55 copies to post so I'm getting there.

Which ones are you still missing? The first issue, More Ghosts and Scholars, and Issue 6 have so far eluded my grasp - though as you know I was able to make myself a reasonable reading copy of the first issue by tidying up some photocopies someone supplied me with. Issues of G&S have tended to crop up more frequently over the years than early Newsletter issues, and I've rounded up a few strays over the years after an initial stroke of good luck in getting a whole bunch of issues in one go, so I'm not giving up hope on those missing issues turning up at some point.
