Most of her stuff is unlistenable to me, her voice at its worst can really grate on your nerves, and her cultivatedly flaky personality does not appeal to me. But there is, of course, much worse out there.

Sightings of her may be rarer than Sasquatch but has her personna really changed all that much over the years from the charming naturally hippie chick I remember from her appearance on Ask Aspel? She has always struck me as someone who just wanted to be an artist without the attendant celebrity. A refreshing if unfathomable concept to most people these days. Kipling was equally reclusive and likewise shunned anything that smacked of pandering to the personality cult. Was his grumpy personality likewise a contrivance, effected to paint himself as an Edwardian oddball? As for the supposedly grating voice; beauty, I guess, is in the ear of the beholder.

I agree with every word you say on her personality. As for the voice, it's all a matter of taste. I find it not exactly lovely but satisfyingly strange. But then I'm quite picky on female voices - I hate and despise vibrato which means that I find early Joan Baez unlistenable to (something of a problem in the early days of our marriage as my significant other was a keen Baez fan - make what you will of my use of the word "was"!).

I have to challenge the assertion that KB's "flaky personality" is an artifice. The alternative is too horrifying to contemplate! In any case, it still does not appeal to me. There may well be subjective elements to all of this, of course.
