Another one of the artists for the EC "New Trend" comic books from the early 1950's has died, at age 91. I think that leaves only colorist Marie Severin (sister of EC war comic artist John Severin), plus minor contributors like Harry "Stainless Steel Rat" Harrison and Harlan Ellison. It seems like most obituaries are concentrating on his work for MAD and his "mainstream" work like magazine covers and movie posters, and not even mentioning his pre-MAD work for EC. (I actually learned of his passing from TV Guide, which he did covers for.) He drew most of the Crypt Keeper's stories, and the covers for 18 of the 27 issues of Tales from the Crypt, as well as the occasional horror story for Shock SuspenStories. (He also was one of the main artists for EC's war titles, but that isn't of interest to most of the members here. He even did stories and covers for Incredible Science Fiction after most of the "New Trend" titles were killed off by the Comics Code.) He drew a lot of the goriest EC horror stories, including the well-known "Foul Play!". Others include "'Tain't The Meat...It's The Humanity!", "Grounds...For Horror!", "The Chips Are Down!", and "Garden Party!". And "Death Of Some Salesmen!": theblogofmystery.tumblr.com/post/112815577130/death-of-some-salesmen-from-the-haunt-of-fear (This is obviously from the recent hardcover EC Archives. The colors aren't that bright and garish in the 1990's reprints.) Uncensored version of the cover for Tales from the Crypt #38, which was available as a poster in the 1970's: comics.ha.com/itm/memorabilia/poster/tales-from-the-crypt-38-poster-ec-graphic-masters-undated-/a/121149-14591.s

It's sad to have lost such an important contributor to EC's comics line. I am only really familiar with his work for the horror titles and it's interesting to hear about his other work. RIP.
