Thanks for the heads-up about the BBC radio programme, Mark. I wonder if Hordern's performance was heard by Jonathan Miller prior to him being cast in the 1968 TV adaptation?
I well remember Mr Salzen's contribution from last year and look forward to reading this new one tonight.

Day 18. Following the Salzen marathon, a short, sharp shocker courtesy of our neuroscientist friend Gary Power, whose recent stories The Butcher Of Peckham and Destiny is a Game are available from Penny Shorts. You can catch up on Gary's least savoury activities by entering the Strange WorldIf last year's calendar offering, Deeper Than Dark Water is a throwback to the weird pulps, then Ben's Best Friend is your Pan Book Of Horror Stories - the mindless sadism years. Having said that, Alex's motive is sure to strike a chord with many. Even now, there are days when I'd kill for a Chopper ...

Today's is a big bugger, init? The whole 12 Days of Christmas in in one PDF. See you in an hour. You can blame my reluctance to tamper with the formatting for the size. It's all double spaced, so really you're looking at maybe twenty-odd pages in a printed book, but I'd still have run it as a serial had we any vacant slots! Well worth the effort, and I particularly like that the tramp comes equipped with regulation bottle of Red Biddy (see also Ramsey Campbell's Mackintosh Willy) plus the sequence involving special guest Harry Price. It is to be hoped Mr. S. will provide further episodes in the history of this most haunted of premises.

The two latest stories have been a study in contrasts but Three Episodes from Horley Hall has taken its place as my favourite so far. I'm a haunted house man and anything with Harry Price in it has a head start in the favourite stakes. (Anyone read Neil Spring's The Ghost Hunters?)

See, today's story is a prime example of why it's a good idea not to have friends. I've got no friends and I've never been torn apart and eaten. Best thing I ever did was not have friends.

For future consideration, do you think I should break up the lengthier pieces where possible? It's not always easy to do so without damaging the feel/ momentum of the story, but when, as in the case of Horley Hall, they're episodic it might be something to consider. For those playing catch up, the episode guide thus far. **** Then .... 1. Major George Fielding Eliot - His Brother's Keeper2. Carlton Dawe - The Old Piano3. Oscar William - The Tooth4. M. P. Dare - A Nun's Tragedy5. Rosa Praed Campbell - Miss Crosson's Familiar6. Oscar Quiroga - The Decapitated Chicken7. Marjorie Bowen - Kecksies8. Irvin S. Cobb - January Thaw9. Fritz Leiber - The Spider10. Rosa Mulholland - The Haunted Organist....Now 11. John Llewellyn Probert - In The Dining Room Of The Damned12. Craig Herbertson - All In The Game13. Thana Niveau - Guinea Pig Girl14. John Forth - Goodbye, Ghosts15. Franklin Marsh - Bah Humbug16. David A. Riley - Dead Ronnie And I17. Drew Salzen - Three Episodes From Horley Hall18. Gary Power - Ben's Best FriendStocking Fillers Anon - Jack El DestripadorRosa Praed Campbell - The House Of Ill Omen**** With nine stories to cram into six days (maths), there's likely to be some action on the stocking fillers thread between now and 24th!

I'd say stick with the original. Although the three episodes were... distinct, I still liked reading one after t'other.

I've fallen behind again but I think the more the merrier, so I'm all for having three episodes in one, and anyway, it's kinda nice knowing there's a new surprise awaiting you the next day, as opposed to already knowing what's coming.

I'm a little behind myself (f'nar), though not much doing this Sunday so I may just have a binge.

So what have we got lined up for Day 19? A Mortbury Press double feature, no less, starring Charles Black and ........ I'm sure you all know Charlie by now. A particularly productive twelve month for the Chillmaster of the Diabolical® has seen publication of his outstanding début collection, Black Ceremonies, an Eleventh Black Book of Horror and a story in the Riley's Kitchen Sink Gothic. It's one of few incontrovertible truths of horror fiction that, if a story features a character named ' Maitland' and was published prior to me posting this, the reader is onto a winner (I make no such bold claim for any 'Maitland' tales which appear subsequently). Needless to say, the following story, reproduced from the aforementioned Black Ceremonies, was first unleashed on a mortified world in 2007 ...

Excellent. I like twist in the tail tales. I've added Black Ceremonies to my Amazon basket off the back of this.

Mortbury Press Double-feature, Part II©Reggie Oliver Autumn .... and, the Dark Princess of Mortbury herself, Anna Taborska, with a story you'll not find in the glorious For Those Who Dream Monsters. At time of writing, we've yet to establish where exactly Autumn first saw print, but it is certainly not included among Anna's several anthology appearances. . ©Michael Marshall Smith "You're only lost if you have a destination." Many thanks to Reggie Oliver and Michael Marshall Smith for kind permission to reproduce their beautiful illustration and photograph respectively. Attachments:anna taborska autumn.pdf (493.94 KB)

That first story today was fantastic. I didn't see that ending coming at all. I don't go much on zombies usually but I really like stories with an ending that comes completely out of left field. Really wonderful story. Imagine knowing that you still have that life to live. Prompts all kinds of thoughts regarding free will and fate and so on. Great stuff.

...and Anna Taborska to look forward to as well. This is turning out to be a great Christmas already.
