The story concerned a man who had spent years studying black magic books and ancient texts. He was planning to summon a demon which he was convinced would make him all-powerful and he would get revenge on all his enemies. Eventually, at the end, when the demon was summoned, it simply dragged the man off, tortured him and tore him apart (or some such horrible fate).
I read this story in an anthology but can't remember the title or author. (I'm pretty sure it wasn't by anybody famous) and I would estimate it was written between 1950 and 1980. It was also quite short, compared to most short stories - approx 3 pages.

Meh, there have been stacks of these deals with a demon gone wrong stories. Can you remember anything about the book's cover artwork? "Quite short ... approx three pages" suggests Frederic Brown and Anthony Boucher as early suspects, possibly even Henry Kuttner's Threshold?

For anyone who's interested, I managed to track down this story. It's "Midnight" by Jack Snow, originally published in Weird Tales, May 1946. I read it in Marvin Kaye's Masterpieces of Terror and the Unknown.
