I actually feel quite upset about this, as Steed was an iconic figure and was really just MacNee playing himself. By his own admission, not much of an actor per se (and I always wondered if he slipped into it as he thought it might be fun and a bit of a doss - he did claim to get expelled from Eaton for selling pornography and running a book), but perfect as Steed. Playing himself? Possibly. I note he had a 2.5% stake in The Avengers which must have funded some investments over the years and explains why he only seemed to work when he felt like it.
Film-wise, notable in The Howling, Incense For The Damnned, and Spinal Tap... Sir Dennis Eaton-Hogg was just Steed running a record company really.
The Avengers set the bar in its day. Steed and Brian Clemens gone in the same year. Now I really do feel old...

This is very sad news indeed. Steed was one of the iconic figures of the 60s and Patrick was perfect in the role. Great chemistry with all his leading ladies on that wonderful show. RIP.

He was in one of my favourite late 80s horror films, Waxwork, and was one of a few actors who have portrayed both Holmes and Watson.

This is sad. What Pulp wrote. He didn't play Steed, he was Steed. Even if Steed was at the time already an anachronismn, I guess. It was the role of his life.
RIP Patrick Macnee
