When Linda Lovecraft met L. T. C. Rolt. Michel Parry, Banbury, April 2013 Our third veteran author-anthologist is the man of a million pseudonyms - 'Linda Lovecraft', 'Carlos Cassaba,' 'Roland Caine' and 'Eric Pendragon', being among of the better known - and the fellow who very nearly brought Bikers Versus London to the big screen. Michel Parry has been with us from the very earliest days of this forum, and it was the kind support and encouragement we received from him, Alwyn W. 'Trash Fiction' Turner and the much missed Bob 'The Duke' Rothwell, saw Vault through the manic first years. This story, to the best of my knowledge, was Michel's first published horror fiction, appearing in Richard Davis's Tandem Horror 2 toward the close of the 'sixties. We hope you enjoy the ride. *apologies for lack of input but have been laid up since beginning of week. 'Normal' service will be resumed ASAP *

I still remember this story from when I read it in the Tandem anthology. Almost put me off buses for life!

Bloody typical. You wait eleven days in the freezing cold, and then two of the blighters arrive at once. The man behind the wheel of our second deadly double-decker is Vault co-founder and resident master of the macabre, Mr. Franklin Marsh. It was Franklin's The Horror Of Dreadstone Moor - serialised over the first five issues of Filthy Creations - sparked a renewal of interest in the works of veteran Black Sorcery novelist Dennis Pendennis to the extent where you can no longer find pristine copies of To Hell With The Devil! for 5p in your local charity shop. Franklin's terror tales have also appeared in The Black Book of Horror Stories and The BFS Book of Horror Stories. Fare's please!

Hard to believe that it is a mere four years since Thana Niveau's first published fiction landed the top prize in the Whitechapel 1888 Society's short story competition. Since then, Lady Probert's work has appeared in several volumes of The Black Book of Horror and Best New Horror, plus such quality anthologies as Terror Tales of the Cotswolds, Death Rattles, and Delicate Toxins. And, of course, there is the little matter of that superb first collection, From Hell To Eternity. Today's festive chiller first appeared in the Simon Marshall-Jones edited The 13 Ghosts of Christmas, published this time last year by Spectral Press. Thank you to both Mr. Marshall-Jones and, most of all, Lady Thana for allowing us to include it on our calendar! Now, dear reader, grab another blanket and settle down with a hot drink. There's nothing to worry about. It's only a bit of snow .... Thana's blog

I can't add to what I said about Thana's story in my review of The 13 Ghosts of Christmas last year: Snow plays an even more pivotal part in Thana Niveau's And May All Your Christmasses... Evil snow, in fact. And, as we have become accustomed to with her tales, this is a relentlessly bleak, harrowing story, colder even than the season.

What can I say. Thana spoils the prospects of a Bing Crosby xmas in one fell stroke. Lovely story.

Craig Herbertson's big breakthrough story should have been The Heaven Makers in The 29th Pan Book of Horror Stories. Trouble is, Clarence Paget neglected to inform him, and it wasn't until several years later that Craig found out via the internet that he'd been published in so prestigious an anthology series. Since then, Craig has become a frequent contributor to The Black Book of Horror Stories, Filthy Creations magazine, and several one-offs, including Back From The Dead, Screaming Book of Horror and Tales from the Smoking Room. Craig's short horror fiction is collected as The Heaven Makers & Other Gruesome Tales (Parallel Universe, 2012), while a new novel, The Death Tableaux, is due ....... A professional musician, Craig remains the only person ever to have written a story for a Vault Advent Calendar while waiting to perform a set to Midge Ure fans. The following story, written earlier this year, has yet to see publication elsewhere. It's short, really bloody nasty, and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Keep up with Craig's musical and writing adventures by following; Craig Herbertson (Live dates, recordings, etc.) Heaven Makers (Fiction) Attachments:Any Old Iron.pdf (54.23 KB)

That was brilliant. I thought so! One of the joys of working on this year's calendar has been catching up on excellent stories I'd not previously read (of the material used to date, those by Thana, Ramsey, and Craig), or personal favourites - David Sutton, Michel, FM - I'd not revisited in a good while. There are plenty examples of both still to feature, and hey!, proper publisher!, you should be paying attention! There's a top horror anthology to be had from the Best of the Vault Advent Calendars. There's even a bloody brilliant rotten one to be had from the Worst of ... etc. Have now added photo's/ artwork/ "artwork" to some of the recent stories that were bereft of same, but don't let that spoil your enjoyment.
