Just reading Song of Kali by Dan Simmons. Has anybody else read it? If so, what did you think of it?

Just reading Song of Kali by Dan Simmons. Has anybody else read it? If so, what did you think of it? I'm sure I posted a write-up of this one, but I guess it was back at the old board. Terrific book, I thought, with a hell of an ending. It had quite an effect on Poppy Z Brite. She wrote Calcutta, Lord of Nerves as a result (find it in her Swamp Foetus collection, or in the 1995 Penguin Sixties collection His Mouth Will Taste of Wormwood). Simmons in turn was impressed by that story. I did find one comment about Song of Kali here - Stephen King's Danse Macabre (etc.)

Nice one. I am near the ending now. Loved the creepy confrontation between the protagonist and the corpse-thing poet. I may buy more of Simmons's work after finishing this. Carrion Comfort looks a cracker of a read especially.

I personally hate reading massive books (page-count wise), but Carrion Comfort is definitely recommended. A recent review on a highly reputable website trashed Summer of Night to no end (and that guy's opinions seem to be spot-on for those who are fans of horror fiction), so skip that one by Simmons.

Well, have just finished Song of Kali, and thought it was OK. Not one of the greatest horror novels I have ever read - got a little confused keeping track of all the Indian names and places - by any means, but hey ho.

Dan Simmons - Song of Kali (Bluejay Books, 1985, 311 pages) Cover found on the net. Thanks to the original scanner.Simmon's first horror novel which won the World Fantasy Award. There are more then a dozen different editions of this, and most feature a classic Kali on the cover.

I loved this novel back in the day, with its evocative description of Calcutta---where I have never been and where Simmons had spent an afternoon or so. I would be afraid to reread it now.
