Armada Ghost Book 1967-1983 : Index by Author

The intention was to list Syd J. Bounds' contribution to the series but I got carried away.

159 stories over 15 volumes, Mary Danby taking over as editor from Christine Barnard with #3. Plenty of input from Mary and her talented Frighteners/ Nightmares regulars plus guest appearances from, among others, 'Flavia Richardson' flying the flag for the Not At Night's, John Halkin, warming up for his Hamlyn 'nature is revolting' horrors, Squelch, Slither, and Slime, David 'Ansible' Langford, and Weird Tales veterans Manly Wade Wellman and August Derleth.

If you're looking for a starter pack, Mary Danby's The Green Ghost & Others collects 42 stories from the series while the Anonymously edited Bumper Book Of Ghost Stories revives 17.

Wow--I was just thinking how useful something like this would be.

Now that I've finished The Green Ghost (more about that soon--the short version is that I'm coming to the conclusion that Alison Prince is the star of the series), I need to track down a copy of the Bumper Book of Ghost Stories.

Any thoughts on which books in the Armada Ghost series to read after that? And how do the Armada Monster books compare to the Ghost books (if one likes Chetwynd-Hayes in small doses writing for adults)?

Yes, Johnny. I look at the list in awe as Dem puts a new slant on the simple words 'carried away.'

Johnny, if you've not done so already, the next time you're in contact with Mary you might like to ask if had a hand in compiling The Bumper Book Of Ghost Stories? Something - i'm really not sure what exactly - tells me she may also have had some involvement in Tales From The Grave (Octopus, 1982), Chamber Of Horrors (Octopus, 1984) and Ghost Stories (Cathay, 1984), though i could well be miles wide on that score.

To my mind, The Green Ghost & Others is by far the better compilation of the two, and not just because it comprises almost a third of the stories. Bumper Book Of Ghost Stories has its moments - Mary Danby's The Last Earl and Syd's The Hanging Tree of those i've read so far - but errs on the tame side. The only Armada Monsters book i've read in recent years is the début and, frankly, you need the patience of a saint. It's my belief that R.C.H. has never received the credit he deserves for his work on the Fontana Ghost & Tales Of Terror books, but in this instance he was the wrong person for the job. Tell him he was editing a children's book and he'd take it as licence to write gibberish. Of course, some people think there's already more than enough of that in his adult collections, too ....

something else about the Armada Ghosts which may or may not be coincidental. The first three have five stories and several authors in common with Kathleen Lines' The House Of The Nightmare and Other Eerie Tales (Bodley Head, 1967)

A very talented lady, i agree. i've been enjoying your guided tour of The Green Ghost very much, and you've determined me to get a rematch under way (i just finished Mary D's Lorimer's Bride - that made for a good start!). Perhaps we should attempt a DIY anthology of bleakest supernatural horror stories for "children"?

Thanks! I just posted my final set of comments on The Green Ghost. I like your anthology idea, and I have a few ideas already.

This section of the Vault is one of my favorites. It's brought many enjoyable books and stories to my attention, including the Chris Priestley collections and the Armada anthologies.

i came up with 25 definites, one or five from adult collections, it's true, but the bulk from designated 'childrens' collections. all being well, will post 'em later today, but if you wanna go ahead in meantime please feel free. i don't even consider it sticking my neck out to suggest that we may have some overlap of authors/ stories.
