i didn't know these things existed until last saturday! my mate mark (sits next to me at Orient, big will hay and boris karloff fan - now there's a mix!) stumbled on one in camden late last year, and it was back at the electric ballroom last week.
we went, his new girl amy was very patient and bored, and the lovely mrs ph wisely said 'go and do your boy thing, for gods sakes' and left me in peace.
well, it was heaven! lots of everything, all of it cheap, most of it bootlegged (which of course i don't condone *cough*) and - most importantly - otherwise unavailable.
for £60 i came away with 62 movies, two old Republic serials, and a box of an ITC series. did i need a 15 film Bela Lugosi box? of course i did, if only for The Drak Eyes Of London, the John Argyll adaptation of Edgar Wallace's novel that was one of the few H certificates in the thirties. Unearthly Stranger and Invasion, two low-budget 60's brit sf/terror films for less than a fiver. Sandy Powell! two movies and two documtaries in one package! 15 East Side Kids movies in a box (was there a better double act at that time than Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall aka Muggsy and Glimpy? they're make Abbott and Costello and Martin and Lewis look like the crud they truly were)!! Vernon Sewell's Ghost Ship, from 1952!
looking round, lots of Italian and Mexican horror stuff, lots of US low budget schlock from the 60's and 70's... really, anyone who likes crud and sees a fair advertised should check it out. copies are sometimes a little rough, but god knows what source a,terial some of these things have. and of course, you need a cheap dvd player that'll play anything. but otherwise, get to one of these and you'll be walking around in adaze. i know i was!

Oh yes, I totally agree with you there, Pulphack. There used to be fairly regular film fairs in Leeds which were a haven for me, but then they stopped. Then they started an annual one at the Leeds International Film Festival (Fangoria section) - but they stopped too. I always keep an eye out for such things locally, but so far no luck in finding one I'm afraid.
