Welles' image with wide-brimmed hat an cloak from the series was very popular with impressionists at the time. Possibly more familiar from those sherry ads he did on TV though? TBH I am not sure if the Great Mysteries series came before or after those ads, but I recall several impressionists dressed like Welles around the same time. Wasn't it Sandemans port he advertised or am I confusing him with someone else? Anyway, nice to see some episodes being released. So far as I am aware he only introduced each episode and didn't star in any of the stories.

lol I had forgotten all about that. Ripping Yarns was a must-watch for me and my classmates, our favourite being indeed Tomkinson's Schooldays.

My two favourites, and I watched them when they were first shown were; The Curse of the Claw (for it's Monkey's Paw theme. A story I had only just discovered not long before I saw the episode when I was 9) and, being a footie fan, Golden Gordon which I used to almost emulate very single week. Thankfully we are a bit better now). A brilliant series which I have on DVD.
And good memory about the Sandeman's Port adverts. I remember them well.

Yep, port for the vault, only I don't have a wide-brimmed hat or voluminous cloak to make the experience perfect. Just looking at Welles' biography, he died at just 70, but what an actor and director, and that superb voice.

It's been a while since I saw it, but I remember it as being very slow, even a bit dull. Directed by Ti West, who I really don't rate at all. Still, it was better than his earlier effort The House Of The Devil, which I pretty much despised.

Watched the Irish horror flick Hole in the Ground the other day - well worth watching. Also finished season 3 of True Detective - much enjoyed it, though nothing supernatural about it.

I finally finished The Haunting by Mike Flanagan on Netflix. It was at least three episodes too long, and I am really tired of the american obsession with addiction and family. That said, the approach on the original was interesting. How the haunting destroys the lives of a family and traumatizes the children. It is a valid approach, I guess. And some of the images surely were creepy, very well done. Personally I even liked how much the Wise movie was used as a blueprint. And episode 5 "The Bent-Neck Lady" was clever.
But, and this is huge but, I absolutly detested the ending. It completly derailed the whole story with its syrupy sentimentalism, pretentious speeches and love conquers all nonsense. What were they thinking? The ridiculous end of the story changed The Haunting from a nice haunted house story into a stupid and cheap fun house. I seldom want to hurl things at the screen, but in this case I was tempted.
Obviously season 2 will mangle The Turn of Screw.I can't wait to see Jessel and Quint in a therapy session.

I was a bit surprised about True Detective 3. It is so stubbornly PG13 that I am not really looking forward for the last episodes GoT. Aside from that it is competently done, even if it lacks originality and is basically a remake of season 1.
