I thought if I titled this thread 'Cambridge Readings in Literature' Vault interest might instantly decline. I was interested though to find that in 1918 Cambridge anthologised The Gold Bug by Poe in this very book. Not strictly horror but with horrific ramifications. The narrator meets his hermit friend, an entomologist who appears to have gone insane. An agreement to accompany the poor deluded bloke leads to pirates, buried treasure and skulls up trees. It's quite a wonderful tale and a sure indication that Poe really could write. Anyone who hasn't read it can get it here. classiclit.about.com/library/bl-etexts/eapoe/bl-eapoe-goldbug.htm

"literature"?!!! Bad enough you read brainy swot Sci-Fi and now this! craig, man, i seriously hope you've not been lured from the righteous path. skulls rule, i'll grant you, but if you reach page three and the girl with big tits ain't been attacked by a giant jellyfish then i'm afraid it's namby pamby, roly poly, frightfully PC, non-horrible NEW horror and they've killed a perfectly good tree for nothing. trust me, because i know what i'm talking about. Everyone says.

Everyone says. Damn. You spotted the earlier sneaky SF post. If its any consolation my next CD has gone Post Apocalyptic so when it comes out in Autumn I may regain a few ghoul points. I swear the next image is going to be tactless tasteless crap preferably with a slime monster and an utterly gratuitous left breast.

glad to help you back on the straight and narrow, my friend. never mind The Gold Bug, remember the GOLDEN MANTRA. Ghastly tales, misogyny and slime. Anything else, it's just pure navel gazing.
