perhaps a few too many over-familiar stories (Poe, Bierce, Dahl, Dunsany) but this looks an excellent selection. The more i think of it, Miss Gentibelle is one of the nastiest, most twisted horror stories i've read outside a Charles Birkin collection and Gwyn Jone's The Pit ought to be better known than appears to be the case. There was an earlier edition (i think the one you've posted is 1967?), again with striking cover artwork, this dated 1957. we've details of another couple of Don Congdon anthologies on the Ballantine Chamber Of Horrors thread.

'67 is correct! Yes, I had read most of the offerings before in other collections, but "Palace of Sleep" was new and stuck with me. Incidentally, the cover artwork for the '57 edition ended up on the title page of the '67 reissue.
