I thought I had all the Wordsworth ones (and I have the unreleased on pre-order), but then you go and show me the special editions... Though since a lot of the contents are repeated from the smaller anthologies, I don't know whether to go for them or not. Probably not, since my shelves are already three rows deep in books. On the other hand, who needs all that much floor?

And have you seen the Wordsworth Varney the Vamp? Must be the fattest paperback I've seen: Another point about Wordsworth is that different editions can have different contents - in the intro to Varney, Dick Collins says that he will treat the life of Rymer in greater depth in the Wordsworth 3rd edition of The String of Pearls. I haven't seen a copy and I don't know if it's been advertised - it's not mentioned in the Wordsworth catalogue.

"Just in passing, we’ll be doing a second edition of The String of Pearls in the next few months, which will feature a completely new introduction from Dick Collins, in which he covers his latest research, and reveals who he is now sure is the true author of the original story."- Derek on Vault Site, August, 2008. Not sure I even saw this second edition let alone a third ?!! The only way I've been able to distinguish between editions is when Wordsworth have reissued them with new covers. I know Wordsworth are very proud of their Varney. Even 18 months ago they were wondering if it was a do-able, and to then knock it out at a mere £2.99 is some achievement. That's also my favourite Tales of Mystery & Supernatural cover photo to date. By the way James, am now just three stories shy of completing Australian Ghost Stories, and it has been a very enlightening experience! The sheer weirdness of Beatrice Grimshaw's The Cave defies my meagre powers of synopsis. Let's just say if anyone has ever wondered if there are any ghost stories involving spectral dinosaurs and (what at first appear to be) a pair of hateful disembodied eyes ...

I've a soft spot for "The Cave." I figure you can't go wrong with a story that has ghosts and dinosaurs; now, where you've got the ghosts of dinosaurs...

Thanks James; I'm interested in palaeontology/prehistory even more than I'm interested in horror fiction, and that's saying a lot - I just thought I'd like to say that.

a welcome new addition to the Mystery & Supernatural series! Rosemary Gray (ed.) - Irish Ghost Stories (Wordsworth editions, May 2011) Price: £2.99 Des Knock Will add contents list when i have one, but judging from Derek's comments on the Wordsworth blog, this is a streamlined edition (albeit a 600 page one!) of the Wordsworth Special edition, Wordsworth Book of Irish Ghost Stories which is almost twice the size!

I'll certainly be interested to see the contents of this - fingers crossed it isn't just a load of LeFanu stuff we've already got!

I love Wordsworth editions - I've lost a few, and it costs next to nowt to replace them. I do wish, though, that they'd publish works by Arthur Machen, and Lord Dunsany. Also, as they have republished works by HP Lovecraft, it would be nice to see some Clark Ashton Smith, and Frank Belknap Long, two writers of great imagination who need a new audience.

I was just looking at the list of tales in the Peter Haining anthology, when i noticed 'Teig O' Kane And The Corpse'. Now, I'm a great fan of the comic book 'Hellboy' by Mike Mignola, and one of the best stories early on was simply called 'The Corpse'. Basically it is this tale, but using Hellboy, who has to get a bad-tempered and smelly corpse into a grave on consecrated ground, by dawn, to rescue a baby that has been replaced by a changeling. It's a sweet tale, done with great verve by Mignola. If you've seen the first 'Hellboy' movie, the [Russian] corpse in that, is an homage to the comic book. For an American comic, Hellboy has a surprising amount of adventures in England, Ireland, and a suspiciously 'Hammer'-like mittel-Europe. ;D

Wordsworth Tales Of Mystery & The Supernatural series: the story so fa Thank you so much for this comprehensive list! Now I can have a proper check list! If only Wordsworth had not changed the colour of the books in the Mystery & Supernatural collection. I prefer the black/grey editions, but now they have the same artwork but the colour of the books been changed to red. Just a trivial thing but... Cheers!
