Excellent find, Dem - I'm just about to read chapter 10 now, and a quick skim through the pdf makes me want to put it aside and read more thoroughly - even the West Ham bits... well, the ones from his youth. It's been a while since I read Ralph's book, but he wasn't too fond of Godfrey either - from what I've read (mostly Steve Holland's interviews with old writers and publishers) he was a right one and not to be trifled with if you valued your body parts. Dave seems to have the killer business instinct, but is more civilised. Oddly, skimming I noted that Ralph was a decent amateur boxer (which I don't recall from his book but have probably forgotten): does this makes the Golds the Geggus' of their era? The Cockney Rejects of publishing?
I know, I know... it's early and I haven't had any coffee yet. These notions will pass...
