Was going to add this to James' Aus pulp thread, but any book this wrong probably warrants one to itself! Ken Macaulay - The Nuclear Nazis (Scripts PTY, "First published in New Zealand and simultaneously in Australia", 1968) blurb; A new nuclear power was at large in the world: THE NAZI PARTY High in the Andes, Marc Gerard, agent for the secret organisation EXITO, locates a Nazi fortress where hideous plans to murder millions are being formulated. They need no delivery system for their super-weapon. There are Nazi groups in most Western Countries and the bombs can be detonated by time devices. Within hours, these power-mad fanatics will be able to set off a world-wide conflagration and reap the benefits of its terrible destruction. And that is their plan Gerard must stop them. But there are those who threaten to destroy him: Dolan, the sadistic hunchback whose cruelty has driven women insane, the sensuous Virginia Long, both promiscuous and deadly ... and the Nazi monsters who would sacrifice anyone to achieve superiority over all ...And as if that's not enough .... Gerard smiled humanlessly in expectation of the guard's surprise at his preparedness..... The guard screamed horribly as he saw the vast emptiness which would be his home for the rest of his life. He might take his adversary with him, but that would not alter the throbbing beats of his personal doom notes. Without reflecting sufficiently long to wipe his brow, Gerard stood calmly and watched the guard floating with surprising slowness towards the bottom. The whole chasm was filled with his screaming. It should have ceased when the rocketing head smashed against a rocky outcrop, but it persisted stubbornly even after the flood of crimson vomited incredibly beautiful patterns over the green uniform...... it's almost Pierce Nace-ian. Back once we've discovered what 'Operation Rice Bowl' is all about ....

I'm very lucky. The guy on the stall knows me pretty well now, so any time I stop by he gets rid of the good stuff and replaces it with the emergency 'so ropey you can't even give it away' stock. Have managed 35 (of 129) pages so far - it took all of ten minutes. Already Nuclear Nazi's is well living up to my expectations - and we've still Dolan, "the sadistic hunchback whose cruelty has driven women insane," to look forward to.

Ye Gods! This alone is worth the price of admission.
Dolan sounds as if he could become a new Vault icon. I'm all on edge to learn more.

When we first met him, EXITO agent Marc Gerard had just escaped from Herr Schmidt's Fortress in the mountains - we don't know what goes on there yet, but he still has the smell of death and purification fresh in his nostrils. Descending the sheer face of a cliff, he's hanging on by fingers and toes when a grinning Nazi guard spots him and takes aim with his rifle. Marc sends him screaming to his death in the abyss below and stops for a cigarette break. Little does Marc realise, he's being watched by Leni, Schmidt's beautiful, blue-eyed, flaxen-haired young daughter. What will she do? We'll have to wait five chapters or so to find out as next it's a flashback to EXITO HQ at the outset of Gerard's adventure.
It's twenty years on from World War II and, from their South American power base, the resurgent Nazi Party are gearing up for another bid at world domination. For years Bosonia thrived under the benevolent dictatorship of General Slaso but that's all changed since his mysterious assassination. The current President, his excellency Eduardo Magdala, is merely the finger-puppet of loyal Hitler-ite and war criminal Eric Schmidt, vile sidekick Adolf Bremmer, and the brilliant scientist, Professor Bruno, who, concealing his Third Reich sympathies, worked for the USA from the end of WWII up until his recent defection.
"Already, Bosonian troops goose-stepped in the Plaza de Slaso. Its officers found the Nazi salute to their liking. The green uniform was an unashamed facsimile of of the Nazi battledress, a wave-sided square replacing the swastika. No Bosonian peon, however ignorant, could be unaware that he lived in a Nazi State controlled by self-expatriated Germans."
Shortly before he was murdered, EXITO agent Weissler learned that not only has Bruno equipped the Nazi's with home-made nuclear missiles, he's also developed a fungal disease that will hand them global control over the wheat crop. With the fate of nations at stake, EXITO must act fast and Marc Gerard, Olympic standard Mountain-climber and womaniser, is sent to the Bosonian capital Patala as Weissler's ideal replacement. The Nazi's are onto him immediately as, along with the Mountaineering skills, Gerard is also a world renowned galloping gourmet and secret agent, so Virginia Long, Bosonia's Controller of Tourism, "invites" him to prepare dinner for the President and guests at the Palace, insinuating in no uncertain terms that she's up for a good seeing to. The lavish meal goes well until Gerard blots his copybook when, in retaliation to Bremmer jibes and insults, he commits an alarming faux pas. Everyone (bar the President's lady, Evona; she's great, she is) nearly expires from shock on the spot, none more-so than the odious Bremmer who gets all shirty: "Are you calling my beloved fuhrer a poof?", etc. Bremmer sees to it that, the following day, Gerard is roughed up and dragged to the Fortress dungeon. The dungeon presided over by Samuel Dolan, Master of Torture!
and on that cliffhanger .....
more to follow ...

"Leni shuddered. She had seen the results of Bruno's experimentation. Twitching blobs of flesh and unco-ordinated movement that had once been virile men. And women."
It's not looking good for Gerard. Chained to the wall, suffering from a hangover and shagged out after last nights wrestling match with Virginia, the last thing he needs to see is some grotesque heap preparing his instruments of pain.
Samuel "the hunchbacked sadist" Dolan takes pride in his work. That's him on the cover in the swastika armband (the illustrator has taken certain liberties with the scene but the nude girl is presumably Leni). Samuel is American, but "treat a man ill and he'll become ill", etc. Rejected by womankind Dolan has thrown his lot in with the fascist sicko's. Down here in the dungeon, he is top dog and his paymasters provide him with all the female flesh he wants. So how does Gerard get out of this one? One vampire attack on Dolan's jugular vein later ....
And that sets the tone for the rest of the book. Gerard and Leni become an item. Bremmer organises a coup, takes over the Nazi leadership and prepares for world domination. Dolan recovers from his injuries to have a second go at Gerard and his now girlfriend. The violence is relentless, proper violence, but the lust action mostly takes place off-page. Even when Marc and Leni get down to business it's disappointingly mundane when the scene screams for bad sex. Also, after that promising start, Mr. Macaulay's prose calms down for the most part, so my Eat Them Alive comparison proved premature. That said, The Nuclear Nazi's is a fast-paced, consistently gripping capture-escape-recapture thriller, possibly inspired by the day's James Bond films, and the final torture scene in Dolan's dungeon of grim despair - Prof. Bruno and his dental instruments versus Marc's molar and gum - even qualifies it as horror fiction.
