Five Star seems to have been based in Manchester, according to the copyright page of this, from 1971: That Crozetti cover is attractive. We made a start on the Five Stars some time ago, carefully hidden on a thread devoted to Petrina Crawford's Seeds Of Evil where no-one in their right mind would look for it! Probably should have another go as they were a neat little imprint with a fondness for reprinting 'Peter Saxon's The Guardians series and those Lancer Gothics that always have you wondering if they'll be mysteries or full on horrors.

Star (1984)Ben Chase is a war hero; but he's got a few problems. Vietnam left him with a hard drinking habit, a mental breakdown - and massive guilt.
So who will believe him when he swears a psychopath is out to get him? When society's sick, the mad are sane and persecution is a killer's game...It's sad but true - Dean R Koontz lost his way just after The Door to December (1985), but there are still 48 earlier books to whet your whistle with! Chase was written under the K. R. Dwyer name, published originally in 1972 -and Star, onto a good thing, started to turn out a few reprints - this one and Shattered amongst them. This is an edgy, but poorly written Koontz - but it's fast paced, and Chase is an interesting character to begin with, but you just wish he'd take a bullet in the gut by the end of the book. Interesting note that this book is dedicated to Bob Hoskins. THE Bob Hoskins??? Again, Star come up trumps with the cover. Theres something about naked damsels in distress that make me reach for my loose change...

When people tell you that Koontz is crap nowadays but "i quite liked his early stuff ...."
He's so prolific that i've never known where to start with him so haven't, thinking that this, the Star edition of Whispers plus Demon Seed (just so long as it's not the Headline 1997 'thanks for the cover artwork, but you needn't have bothered' edition) would probably see me OK for DRK unless there are some other neat nekkid covers you might want to suggest, or even a novel or two that might be worth reading?

Theres something about naked damsels in distress that make me reach for my loose change... I just finished reading this book, but my edition didn't have quite such a fetching cover. The main character Chase is fleshed out quite well, and he has some baggage carried over from the war that gives him an edge, but the story about a killer hunting Chase down doesn't really seem to get out of third gear, and the resolution when it came didn't hold many surprises.

Still haven't watched the film, being meaning to find a copy for years. Re The Sentinel, unless I'm thinking of another film by the same name, it's well worth getting hold of a copy, Johnny. I saw this at the cinema when it first came out, and it's brilliant. Some really creepy characters in it - the old guy with a cat and a parrot, and a pair of elderly ladies. At first, they all seem friendly and helpful, but they turn out to be the neighbours from hell - literally! And a rather unpleasant eyeball stabbing scene too, if I remember correctly. Well worth a look. ;D

I have the US DVD of The Sentinel, got it from amazon a few years back. A genuinely creepy film with some real scary moments. Winner courted controversy by using real deformed people for the film's climax, which some regarded as exploitative. The ending is very effective.

Star (1977)'GOD IS DEAD'Formed on Walpurgisnacht 1966, the Church of Satan has since attracted followers throughout the world. Its High Priest, Anton LaVey, or 'The Black Pope', formulated its rites in positive forms of celebration: Satanic weddings; funerals devoid of sanctimonious platitudes; lust rituals for the realisation of sexual desires; and destruction rituals enabling triumph over enemies and the achievement of life's goals.
In THE SATANIC BIBLE LaVey explains the philosophy of Satanism, describing the rituals and trappings that create a church of true flesh-worshippers. A challenge to other religions, this book shows how to initiate Satanic cults and ritualise black magic - it is a must for all those fascinated by the dark, hidden forces within man's nature, and for those determined to overcome the repressions and inhibitions fostered through so many generations.[/color][/i]

By Ian Thorne [really Julian May] Blob, The Creature From The Black Lagoon Deadly Mantis Dracula Frankenstein Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman Godzilla It Came From Outer Space King Kong Mad Scientists Mummy, The Wolf Man, The These aren't actually novelizations so much as children's book summaries of the films. I've read most of them as they were available in my elementary school's library. They're essentially just summaries of the movies' (and movie series') plots in storybook form, under 100 pages.
