Edogawa Rampo - The Daydream [hakuchūmu]: ( Shin Seinen, 1925). A sultry spring day. The narrator is passing through a bustling street, where a throng has gathered around someone who's giving some speech or performance. Turns out a middle-aged man is proclaiming, in a most dramatic manner, how he adores his beautiful wife, how she cheats on him, how he begs her not to leave him and how he finally kills her, chopping her into five pieces and turning her into shirō [corpse wax] so no one will find out. Behind the crowd is a pharmacy. The man seems to be its owner and has been doing the charade for a few days. The onlookers appreciate the show, laughing heartily, including the patrolling copper. Perhaps they feel for this cuckolded husband, who seems to have finally lost it. No one cares to go under the awning to take a close look at the wax model behind the shop's showcase, except the narrator. The Japanese original can be read here. An English translation can be found in Seth Jacobowitz [tran.], The Edogawa Rampo Reader (Kurodahan Press, 2021).

His horror stuff is brilliant. I'm tempted to add The Daydream to the mummy biblio, or would that be pushing it a bit?
