Actually, that photo's really growing on me. Thanks, Rog. An iconic image. Pity about the man's face!

Found this growing on a roof today near here: And others: This looks a bit rude: ========== Between Holland-on-Sea and Clacton (10.00 am, 19 May 2008):- There are 2 cones just above the pier, one like a mushroom, the other a flying-saucer. Bigger version here with inset of possible 3rd UFO cone: weirdmonger.blog-city.com/clacton_ufo.htm

Actually, that photo's really growing on me. Thanks, Rog. An iconic image. Pity about the man's face! I wish I'd started thinking of 'Cone Zero' as the title of a 1950s low-budget, British SF thriller, from the start, Des. I might have come up with a story that way! What's wrong with the man's face? Isn't that Alan Whicker?

Brilliant, Des - that made me laugh! As my day job involves instructing students in how not to plagiarise (amongst other things), I have a mind to show some of them that - if I dare ...

That's not a ufo, it's a Chinese style box kite, I'm sure of it. Sorry, that was rather killjoy!
Your words are always entertaining, mr Des.

I've now spotted something else in the photo, and blown it up here I think blowing up UFOs over Clacton might be best left to the military, Des!

Hmmm, a little more difficult, that is. Don't laugh, but I have lots of reference books on weather and natural phenomena, so I'm going to have a look tomorrow to see if I can solve this mystery!

Poo, I may be nerd of the century but I still didn't come up with anything useful! However, I would LIKE this odd shiny thing to be that most mysterious of electrical phenomena, ball lightning. It has different properties to the usual kinds of lightning and can actually batten on to an object or person and follow it about, so you really have to check all your cones in close up as your publication may be being stalked by a supernatural light. And if anyone tries to tell me it doesn't exist, I will put my fingers in my ears and sing loudly...

.. and can actually batten on to an object or person and follow it about .. I now have this image in my head of Des being followed everywhere by a cone-shaped ball of lightning!

There's some poor kid on the pier sobbing its little heart out 'cos their nice shiny helium-filled balloon blew away...
