Ooo, glad they're now selling these via eBay - I'm going to get one really soon, once I feel it's safe to explain to my husband that I've gone and bought yet another book! But I can't see them for sale yet on the BFS site, David - are you sure they're there?

I think the latest from the BFS that it will be on the BFS site soon, though you can email their shop to order it. Though that's not as good as being able to do that automatically. I'm not sure why it's taking them so long, though it is a good step forward that they are selling stuff via ebay and, hopefully, reaching a wider market.

Paul Finch's contribution to this anthology, The Retreat, is particularly good. It's about a small, desperate group of veteran German soldiers on the retreat from Stalingrad in the midst of a frozen winter where frostbite and the cold are as much a danger as the opposing Soviet hordes. As you would expect from Paul there is plenty of no-holds graphic violence - where the horror of what happens in war is juxtaposed against supernatural horror, at times making the reader wonder which is worse. I was impressed in particular by the small incidental details woven into this tale, adding to its sense of authenticity, together with some truly gritty characterisation. A horrifying yet totally engrossing tale, worth the price of the volume alone.

That cover illustration, by Les Edwards, previously appeared as the cover for Aidan Chambers' "Haunted Houses" published by Piccolo in 1989.

This is probably the only place on the internet, if not the planet, where this kind of correlative genius is almost commonplace ... (I don't include myself - I'm lucky if I find my slippers in the morning)

Paul Finch's contribution to this anthology, The Retreat, is particularly good. Paul has a cracking story in the Gary McMahon edited anthology We Fade to Grey, too. In fact the whole book is rather good.

Is a "Grey" book as good as a "Black" book though?
David
PS I've yet to come across a Paul Finch story I didn't think first rate.

For a long time I found Paul Finch to be a very hit or miss writer - some of his stuff I liked, some of it left me cold. But recently it's definitely been more hits than misses - his collection Stains is particularly recommended, and I'm looking forward to his new collection from Ash Tree.
I'll be snapping up a copy of Houses on the Borderland too, as soon as I'm able.
