This one was written by Mike Newton, who has written over a hundred entries in the series. He even co-wrote some of the early ones with Pendleton, the master himself, as a young guy.
Of all the guys he at least has an idea how a Bolan should be sounding. Unfortunatly the bigger Bolans tend to drag a lot.

Those have to be the least scary skinheads ever. And what's with the "skinheads" with long hair? Does that say "boy band is the new type of skin head" And is that other one a boy in a skirt? WTF is going on? We need to be told.

WTF is going on? We need to be told. If you got those for under 50p Jonny, that's incredible! Hey Doc - yep, the skins grew their hair out to Suede, Boot Boy and then Smooth length, but still continued to create havoc as the 1970s wore on. It says Roy Baird not Boy Band - I think. That is a girl in a skirt (or a Sort - a female Smoothie) - Allen claimed in Skinhead Girls that he was receiving as much fan mail from girls as boys so wrote a couple of distaff stories for the aggro females.

Many thanks for clarifying that. Not being familiar with these sub-cultures, I had started to get completely the wrong idea about "sorts" and "smoothies"...

Interesting times. We were asked at primary school - mod or Rocker? Had to get that one right even if you didn't know what it meant.
If you look at the clothes on a bay city roller you'll see the standard kit sort of hyped up for show biz. You couldn't go outside the door unless you had wranglers or Levi jeans (or for formal wear prince of wales check DM's - Ben Sherman shirt, braces and tank top. We bypassed skinhead but were on suede head by the time we could grunt 'agro' in a suitably deep voice. An essential was to walk with a kind of sailor swagger with hands in back pockets and believe it or not, there was set number of fingers that had to be in the pocket.
Looking back I can now see why adults used to have a sort of bemused but knowing smile when you appeared to pick up a friend. Must have been choking with laughter when the door was shut.

Bay City Roller style trousers (worn at half-mast, with pockets half-way down the legs and tartan trim - nice) were banned from my high school.

Mafia owned (allegedly) book company publishing a 'tell very little of' book on JFK? No brainer, I had to snaffle it. And yes Franklin, all a touch under 50p!

and to further prove the shite/treasures (delete where applicable) that are held in Mains Mansions... Well...someone did have to mention the Bay City Rollers, and as I've already graced the boards with a bit of Crossroads, only thought it fair that Corrie got a look in!

Nabbed Maggots by Edward Jarvis from a UK seller off of eBay and Slime by William Essex on Amazon. I was going to get Slimer, the other book in my I-want sig, but an ex-boyfriend (who is still close friends with me) recommended Slime to me so I decided to give it a try and save Slimer for another day. I hope that using the Internet to get these books isn't considered cheating. I know it'd be much more awesome to find them in a used bookstore but truthfully there's just nothing where I live, especially where UK books are concerned, so I get 'em however I can without shame.

kooshmeister, its not cheating if you pulps on the net or exchange them. Some of our worthies are cursed in that they must seek out every available rag tag and bobtail source for the books and blessed that these outlets are reasonably accessible. All that's required is to be passionate about them.
