Considering how influential this book was on me, I should remember it much better. However, would love to track it down so, can I ring any bells here?
Got this book from the 'for older readers' section of the children's library, Wood Green, London in early 1976. It was an anthology called 'Uncanny' and I remember it had Gerald Kersh's 'An Extraordinarily Horrible Dummy' in it and a story called 'Big Surprise' about an old man who gets some boys to dig a deep hole, which they do, and find a box, with the old man inside!!!
I wish I could remember who compiled it, and some of the other stories. This will be of no use to anyone, but whenever I listen to Bowie's 'Young Americans' album (which is fairly often) I am reminded of reading this book. I think my brother must have had that album for Christmas 1975 and I would have been playing it to death (being a young Bowie fan of course) whilst reading....
It was a hugely influential read though, as it finally gave me the courage to go up to the newsagent and buy Pan volume 10, and the rest is history!
I would love to know more about this book, so have I jogged any memories with this very limited amount of info?
Cheers
Colin

Bowie - the man. Unfortunately not triggering the necessary bells for me to find the book but the erudite Vault crew often need only a snippet of cloth and a handful of coloured beads to produce the long sought title

Wow - thank you so much - that is brilliant, and spot on too - looking at the list of titles I think I was quite lucky to find that one in the 'for older children' section!
This site is just marvellous.
And highly addictive too....................
Thanks once again 's' and Craig
