He called it Haunted Scholars. If I remember rightly, there was some discussion over the title of the book. I didn't really want it to be called Ghosts & Scholars (or Ghosts and Scholars as it eventually became), and possibly Haunted Scholars was a suggestion we put forward to the publisher. They (Michael Cox specifically) preferred that we stick with Ghosts and Scholars, and the rest is history.

Smith) would be a brilliant title for a Haunted Library booklet. Was MES ever a Ghosts & Scholars subscriber? He is (or was) a fan of MRJ (and, famously, Arthur Machen).

I've just re-read "Dr Horder's Room". It is so fresh and well written, and the underlying connotations are such, that if I was told it was written today for Ghosts & Scholars, I would have believed it. It's a pity that Patrick Carleton did not write any other MRJ-inspired stories.

This book dealer's description of "Dr Horder's Room" in Thrills (1935) sort of gives the game away. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler} In Patrick Carleton's "Doctor Horder's Room," an antiquarian vampire story after the manner of M. R. James, an Elizabethan magus battens upon young collegians for their precious bodily fluids. It's the only story spoiled! www.lwcurrey.com/pages/books/154539/charles-lloyd-birkin/thrills-a-collection-of-uneasy-tales

It was the fact he used illustrations won me over - it was very space age for 1991. Had a rifle through a stash of old catalogues earlier and can't find another from Richard, so am wondering if there were any more after #1? Am sure there must have been, as I bought Hugh Lamb's The Taste Of Fear from him and it isn't listed in the above. It would be most unlike me to get rid of anything with staples. I received another book catalogue from Richard Dalby a few years ago. It was the same format as the one illustrated. I also got my copy of the Taste of Fear from Richard. It is autographed by Hugh Lamb. I've just attached a bigger and better scan of the excellent cover. Note this from ISFDB: www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?276972 "Notes: Contents from Vault of Evil, so a little suspect[!]".

"Contents from Vault of Evil, so a little suspect[!]". That's an example of what I've learnt to see as "being praised by faint damnation".

This one has more ... well, gruesomeness. Re: Isfdb: Rubbish. I haven't encounter one listing which had errors except maybe ones I did myself.

I do feel bad about this. The Ghosts and Scholars anthology is now of monetary value to book dealers only. It is downloadable from here: book4you.org/book/22760441/9ea606 If it's any defence, I've done worse.
