Does anyone know what this book might have been? Some kid hears of a legend of a ghostly drummer boy in the village, gets up in luminous paint and a uniform and a drum to play a prank, but then it gets all scary and weird. Might have been a leon garfield?

It's called "The Usurping Ghost". Good story - and that picture really is creepy!
