Evangeline Walton - Witch House (Arkham House, 1945; Monarch, 1962)Cover by Ralph Brillhart I started reading this one last night, based on favorable comments from E. F. Bleiler and Marshall Tymn. I love the 1960s-style cover art.

Apparently the story does involve a spectral hare of some sort, though I haven't read far enough to know whether it's evil or not. That cover would also work for Wellman's "The Dreadful Rabbits." The 1979 Ballantine cover is less successful, I think: [/img]

Having finished the book, I have mixed feelings about it. It falls squarely within the "psychic detective" subgenre, and much of the book consists of describing the investigator's psychic impressions. Walton effectively builds an aura of menace for the haunted house. On the other hand, I found the romantic element unpersuasive and the racial subtext disquieting (though, to be fair, Walton's handling of that last aspect is complicated).
By the way, the spectral bunny is totally evil but not exactly a true bunny.

And here is the evil bunny again.
I read this in 2020 and side with cauldronbrewer. For its time it was quite original, and I thought the sex magic intimations quite daring. But I could have thrown the child to the bunny because it was an absolutly tone-deaf and obnoxious characterisation. Give me John Saul any day. Apparently it was a dud in its first publication at Arkham House, 3000 copies the most of which 2 decades later were still not sold.

And here is the evil bunny again. It's a challenge making bunnies look evil, but the cover artist made a solid effort. I like the color scheme.
