Only just discovered this forum, can't wait to get stuck in... ..in the interim someone on here may be able to help with this.. I always enjoyed the film (and book) The Monster Club when I was younger and found the illustrations of the "Ghouls" at the end incredibly unsettling, you can see some DVD captures here: tinyurl.com/28f3h7uI was wondering if anyone knew who the Artist was, or if the illustrations were taken from another publication? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Mark Morb

Hi Mark & welcome
Those illustrations were done by artist John Bolton especially for the Humgoo episode of the film, and he subsequently did a comic book adaptation of the entire movie because producer Milton Subotsky didn't have the money for any other publicity. Bolton did some superb work for House of Hammer magazine and there's a thread about that here somewhere!

John Bolton continues to do a lot of good work in comics. He did a gorgeous adaptation of Clive Barker's Yattering and Jack a few years ago.

Bolton also painted the monster geneology tree seen in the film before being stolen off set. The film was adapted by both Bolton and David Lloyd ( who handled the Donald Pleasance vampire Beeny Squad story). After being used as a publicity device , the film was reprinted in Halls of Horror ( when it briefly returned) and I believe has been reprinted again in John Bolton's Halls of Horror comic - but not having seen an issue this needs verifying! I'm lucky enough to own one of the original promotional copies. ;D

welcome mark. to cannibalise a couple of old posts .... When Sam manages to temporarily escape the clutches of the ghouls by taking refuge in the crumbling church, he discovers that he is not the first to seek sanctuary within its walls. Propped up in a chair, a skeleton, protecting his manuscript on the history of the Loughville community. As Sam reads through this terrifying document, several images are flashed onscreen to illustrate the narrative. These brilliant graphics are the work of John Bolton, who also drew the comic book adaptation of the movie. I've taken the liberty of reproducing a few samples here from my never-ending supply of grainy screenshots, but if anybody knows if the originals have ever been published in book form, I'd be delighted to know! ******* The only Halls Of Horror I have is this one, Vol 3 no. 1 (undated, 1980's) Dave Reader - Psycho II Jim Steranko - Robert Bloch Interview Robert Bloch Filmography Tony Crawley - The Psycho Stabbing Michel Parry - The Spawn Of Psycho Stephen Jones - Horror On The Cheap Dez Skinn/ John Bolton - The Monster Club Keith Dudley and Glen Davies - A Taste Of Paranoia John Fleming, David Pirie & Anthony Tate - Classic Gore Ramsey Campbell - Campbell's Corner Jones' Horror On The Cheap is the story of Bloch and Amicus, and A Taste Of Paranoia is an overview of Hammer's psychological thrillers. Ramsey Campbell devotes his column to an attack on censorship (the video nasties debacle was then at its peak) and John Bolton provides an excellent comic-strip adaptation of The Monster Club which concluded in the next issue (i think there might have been a picture of Jaws on the cover?

I hadn't made the connection that Halls of Horror was run by the chaps who also ran Quality Comics in Lewisham Way, back in the old days. Used to spend many an afternoon in that shop. Anyway, more Bolton; this from part 2 of The Monster Club comic adaptation. Mark S.
