FantasyCon 2012 proper starts today in Brighton. Everyone who is anyone will be there, handy for us as we can get on with stuff in peace. There are always a ludicrous amount of books launched at the event, and usually, only a small percentage have Vault appeal. Not this year. If anything demonstrates that horror is on it's uppers, here's a list of just some of the titles I know will be receiving the promo treatment over coming days.
Stephen Jones (ed.) - Best New Horror 23 Stephen Jones (ed.) - Zombie Apocalypse: Fightback Charles Black (ed.) - Ninth Black Book Of Horror John Llewellyn Probert - The Nine Deaths of Dr. Valentine Mary Danby - Party Pieces (ed. Johnny Mains) Bail Copper - Return Of The Fleers Johnny Mains (ed.) - Screaming Book Of Horror Marie O’Regan (ed.) - The Mammoth Book of Ghost Stories by Women Marie O’Regan & Paul Kane (eds.) - A Carnivàle of Horror: Dark Tales from the Fairground Ramsey Campbell - The Kind Folk Robert Shearman - Remember Why You Fear Me Paul Finch (ed.) - Tales Of Terror From East Anglia Thana Niveau - From Hell To Eternity (pre-launch special) Paul Finch - Enemies At The Door Jonathan Oliver (ed.) - Magic Return of Fear magazine
Unfortunately, Lord & Lady Probert are so otherwise engaged in midnight raffles, panels, signings & what have you, they can't fit in a pantomime this year so we won't be able to bring you our live satellite link up, though if any body wants to send us any breaking malicious gossip please feel free.
Would like to wish all of the above the very best and hope that those Vault members & friends in attendance enjoy a smashing weekend.

I'd loved to have gone. I'll raise a glass or two to the Vault members when I'm in the little island of Norderney

Sadly, THE SCREAMING BOOK OF HORROR wasn't delivered to the convention - hopefully Screaming Dreams will get them soon. Till then - here is...

Where's all my lovely bitchy gossip, you fiends? How did the various launches go? Whose ghost story did Ramsey read? Etc.

I really enjoyed Adam Nevill's The Ritual - it's a bit Blair Witch, a bit Predator, with some Scandanavian pagan black metal stuff thrown in for good measure. Definitely a worthy winner, and hopefully his breakthrough to the big time (if he's not already there).

Will be looking to nab Ritual and Rob Shearman's Everyone’s Just So So Special, the latter purely on the strength of his surreal contributions to A Book Of Horrors and Zombie Apocalypse! Fightback. If you ever wondered what Sir Andrew Lloyd-Weber would be like if he took a turn for the even creepier ....

Definitely a worthy winner, and hopefully his breakthrough to the big time (if he's not already there). I've seen a lot of copies of Ritual at remainder bookshops for $5, and must pick up a copy. Shocking to say I've never heard of Rob Shearman, but he must be bloody good for edging out Mrs Midnight.

Treasure those remainder bookshops while they last, James. They were a happy hunting ground for us in London for several years, now virtually all of them have gone the way of pubs. You wake up one day and suddenly they've all become a pizza parlour or Paddy Power. God, but it's depressing. It was Rob Shearman's Alice Through The Plastic Sheet in A Book Of Horrors (which surely must have pushed The Weird close for best anthology) turned me on to him several centuries after everyone else, and The Play's The Thing, his contribution to Zombie Apocalypse! Fightback confirms that the man has a flair for the comic-disturbing. This cursed scatter-gun approach to reading means i've still to get around to Granny's Grinning ( The Dead That Walk) and Featherweight ( Best New Horror #22), so will put that right sooner rather than later.

Well, the Black Book launch went very well. And after I could have sold more copies if I'd had any left.
I'll get yours out to you, Dem, once a fresh batch arrive from Lightning Source.

Truly delighted for you Charles, and you can be sure i'll get well stuck in when batch 2 hits the fan. My one disappointment is Milan's stint in Type was over before we had the chance of arranging a Black Book window display and sucking in the local trendies.
