The Scourge - Nick Sharman (bestselling author of The Cats) Hamlyn 1980. A chilling evil stalks its unsuspecting victims Why did TV personality Anne Warren suddenly drive her car off the motorway at manic speed? How did Alan Brown drown in his own bathroom? What made a Soho porm merchant hurl himself under an Underground train? What terrible evil caused widowed Mrs Anstruther to die of fright? THE SCOURGE As the third mysterious death occurs private investigator Kiley starts to put together a horrifying pattern. But soon there are six victims...and Kiley's search for the truth becomes a desperate race against time. The trail leads to Project Alpha - a diabolic force that releases psychic demons. And it's in the control of a madman obsessed with the desire for revenge... Although Hamlyn have categorised this as Fiction Horror, I didn't find a great deal of horror in it - that wonderful cover, the widow Anstruther's ghastly death and a last minute raising of the occupants of an Intensive Care Ward as a kind of Zombie mini army all raise a shiver, but it's more of a detective thriller, a suspense mystery, or a good episode of The Avengers. Damn' good read though, once you've got over the hilarity of a main character called Kiley (just Kiley). All power to Hamlyn for blurbing NEL classic The Cats too. A disgusting display of money-grubbing cashing-in, or further proof that these writers, publishers, cover artists etc were all one big happy band?

Prize-winning bad taste as far as the jacket goes. Will have to revisit, don't remember much about the plot. Not that you need one with a cover like that
